Publisher Summary: On the world called Hyperion, beyond the reach of galactic law, waits a creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

I know this is on a lot of "top 100 sci-fi" books, so maybe I'm just missing something, but I found this series frustrating to read. It was interesting world building, and I found myself interested in the plot, but ultimately I found the writing style to be cumbersome and uninteresting.
That said, if this is on your list this is a good deal. Not crapping on the post, just saying I don't get the hype this series gets.
Its because its a 2 book series.
Personally for me its one of the best Sci Fi novel I've ever read.
One of the all-time greats. Finished 4th in Locus Magazine's greatest science fiction novel of the 20th century. That said, this book does end pretty much on a cliffhanger.

I completely agree. While the some of the world building was interesting I found the overall story very tedious. I read a lot of science fiction and couldn't recommend this.

Same. Really interesting aspects to the story, but it was a massive slog to get through.
I say that as a huge fan of the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Erickson.
Just be aware that this is really more like half a book. The first two novels were originally one book that was split into two
I've read a lot of sci-fi, but Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion are among my favorites. I heard the follow-ups weren't as good and never continued, because these two felt perfect. I wouldn't call them quick reads though, and the language can take a bit of adjusting

Maybe a bit more of a fantasy than sci fi? I thought it was great...
I also love this series. It does start out a little slow. The first book is a mostly a bunch of people getting together and telling their story individually. It's almost like a collection of short stories. Rest of the series is more normal/linear and moves a little faster. This is in my top 5 sci fi/fantasy series.
Others included in that top five for me would be Dune, wheel of time, far seer series, foundation.
