Is it possible to buy the Designer ipad version as a present for a long distant friend? Do I just buy it in my acct and forward the key to her?
Yes you can gift the app. With the iPad version, it needs to be downloaded from the AppStore, so in this case you would login to the AppStore yourself, pull up the App, click the Share button on the top right, then select "Gift App" and enter the recipient's info.

See attached screenshot for more info.

You can not use a scanner directly in the Affinity software. You would have to scan to a compatible file and then open it in Affinity Photo. That might be in their long term roadmap, but not in v1 of the product.

I used Paint Shop Pro back in 2015 and I think Affinity Photo has a slightly more Photoshop feel to the interface. Personally I don't think Paint Shop Pro is twice-the-price better.
Thanks. You can pick up Paint Shop Pro with other software periodically at Humble Bundle for real cheap - $25 or less. So it is the same price.

Are any add-ons that are 50% on sale worth purchasing? There are quite a few of them...

I already had Affinity Photo which has worked great for me. With this great sale I had to go all-in with them and pick up Designer and Publisher too. Very powerful software without the monthly fee that Adobe charges. Pros can decide for themselves what works for their businesses and partners but I think most of the rest of us can get by pretty well with Affinity at a significantly lower total cost that only grows wider over time.

Did you pick-up any add-on apps that are also on sale? Are they worth it?

Early on it seemed like they were releasing updates all the dang time, but recently it is more like 2-3 times a year. I guess as the low hanging fruit gets developed the more complex features take longer to build and/or fix.
I guess my real question is how often do they release a major version (upgrade)? Is this the first version. If so, will there be a 2.0? No where does it say it's a software with free lifetime upgrades.

Currently these are versions 1x. There are some posts about it on the forum, but basically small updates are free and a major update like version 2.0 which will eventually be released, would have a cost associated with it.

For reference, you can see the other version releases here under previous versions:

They would be my hero if they came out with an Acrobat-like program. Imagine paying $50 for an Acrobat Pro-like app instead of the highway robbery prices Adobe charges!

In for one. Not that I am going to use it instead of photoshop, but I think it's time to support a good competition to adobe. will make a picture to post tonight.

I bought Affinity Designer back in 2016 and they've been upgrading v1.xxx ever since. As each new application comes out it is matched in version to the others. So the first release of Affinty Designer was 1.0, Affinity Photo was actually 1.3.1, and Affinity Publisher was 1.7.

I would guess they'll have a free v1.9 series for all the apps and then charge for the 2.0 release. If that is what happens for their entire suite then Designer would have seen 6 years of free upgrades, Photo about 4 years, and Publisher about 2 years (roughly).

Whether they give free upgrades to people who have purchased in the last 6 months or last 12 months, or whatever is anyone's guess. So far none of their Affinity apps have ever seen a paid upgrade.
