So the only thing they improved was a 64gb card instead of a 32gb?

LOL very unlikely! I swear they cripple the new models intentionally to bring up more hype months after release after they've fixed the "issues" and bump sales. I always buy at least a model behind. The kinks are typically worked out and the cameras can be found cheaper used. Use it for a year or 2.. sell.. buy a newer used model.. wait for the new model kinks to be fixed.. rinse and repeat.

NO! Mine overheats badly. Want an external mic? You need the media mod. Oh, remember the overheating issue? The media mod acts as insulation keeping the gopro even hotter and it just shuts down while recording. F gopro!

The thermals are a known issue. The media mod simply makes the problem much worse.

So this is the same price as if you traded in as part of their trade up program.

No. The 1.5 firmware didn't resolve the thermal issues.

TY, I have been trying to pull the trigger on this but not sure if it is worth it now. Maybe the later batch is better? I have been reading it has to do with the 60fps. I can live without that.

The media mod makes it worse due to acting as an insulator.

I'm using 2160p, 30fps, and it'd die within 15 mins indoors, running off USB with the battery removed.

They didn't upgrade the processor, though they added some features. Why in the world they didn't get a newer proc is beyond me.

Overheating seems to be a universal problem shooting ultra high quality for extended periods of time. Even Canon's latest and greatest R5/R6 mirrorless cameras overheat at 4K (relatively novel video quality for full frame sensors- $2500-3900 with no lens) such that the firmware has a countdown timer built in. So I'm not trying to give GoPro a pass but there's a lot of processing power involved in shooting H.265 video at high resolution especially at high frame rates in a tiny box with no fan that's also waterproof. Not to mention all the other processing going on (stabilization, etc.). Microchips generate heat, it's just what they do. I've found folks complaining about overheating with other models as well.

I wonder if it more comes down to what you're trying to do with it. Shooting continuously in ultra high quality in a stationary environment (a kids soccer game or a play) might be better suited to a real video camera or just bumping down the quality (more manageable file size too). Some folks doing that have had success adding heat sinks to the case. High action shots with lots of air flow (it is an action camera after all) might fair better. Finally if you're shooting for edited online videos for Facebook or youtube I would argue 15 minute + clips are actually extraordinarily long. Nobody wants to watch a continuous unedited video longer than that so maybe cut in-camera and use shorter takes? Not to mention the intended audience will mostly be watching on small screens anyway, so do you really need 4K60 or 5K if that's the purpose? 1080p vs. 4K is difficult to distinguish even on normal sized televisions.

Just my 2 cents. Maybe we'll see better processors that generate less heat in the future, but if Canon's best at 10x the cost still has the same limitations I'm not holding my breath. If how you shoot (duration and quality) works better on other cameras then consider those models and skip the feature upgrades of this one.
