My family of 4 shares one switch, however we each have our own accounts to play with others. Nintendo is not generous enough to let each of our accounts have online access so we buy the family plan to save money.

You cannot have more than 36 months. So I'm not sure if it would truncate a card that one over that amount or how that works but the rule of thumb is you can do three at a time

Yes you can only have 36 months total... So if you buy more, adding it can't exceed 36 months.
