Theres a tracker that makes the game end faster if more buildings are destroyed. Finally, there are event cards, they add a twist to each game and only the same 2 are active the entire game, like one event card has tanks that move around the tiles and make monsters lose energy. It wasn't that hard. The game setup sounds complicated but when you start playing, is pretty straightforward. We did forget to do the events cards the first time around since they only activate at the end of the player rounds.
