DW735X Heavy Duty 13" Three-Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer for $499. (See lower price of $499 in Cart plus approximately $35 S&H depending on zip code.) Next best price I could find was $630 on Amazon with free S&H.

Not quite as good as the ACME deal with a stand that was available during Black Friday, but best deal I could find on this Dewalt planer right now.

I borrowed a friend's DW735X last month, and it is a beast for the average homeowner. I planed about 100 square feet of rough cut cherry, and it chewed through it would ease. Based on that experience and upcoming project, I decided to buy one for my own workshop.

The only thing I don't like about DW735 is it's so loud! Extremely loud. For those who are in quite neighborhood, I suggest looking at the Makita 2012nb. Rated at 83db and has similar performance to DW735 (don't snipe).

Interesting opinion. I thought that DW735 is the holy grail of everything and nothing really compares to it as much. Would you say makita planer is very close to performance? Do you own one?

Ordered it and then it said shipment may be delayed, you know, after showing me it would be here next week before I paid for it.

I do think the DW735 is the best due to the four (4) screws it uses to support and move the head. Most other home planers like the makita only use two (2) giving more chance for snipe.

The DW735 is very loud but I think they all are pretty loud. I went with the DW735 because it really is the best one out there for a home owner and it has great resale.

What's important is the movement of the cutterhead when the board passes. The Makita one had the cutterhead lock which is supposed to eliminate snipe. The dewalt had four beefy screws that tries to fix the cutterhead. Based on what I read, both are great in terms of snipe. With that being said, I sold dewalt and got a Makita simply due to noise factor. Both are great machines.

Very good point on resale — I just bought a 735X for $750, though mine included a brand new Shelix helical cutter ($400) and the custom magnetic tool to change out the cutter heads.

Can't speak to either (yet) but keep in mind this DeWalt is a 13" and the Makita is a 12" machine

I have Ridgid which I got recently. I don't use a planner much as I work with dimensional lumbers mostly so far. I am starting to work with hardwood and that is why I got a planner. I think I will use a planner like once a month max.

Is paying double the money for this worth it?

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank CoolDime7963

Also should mention that you really want dust/chip collection for this as it has a very strong dust extraction motor. The "hack" is a 5 micron Rockler Dust Collection bag — you can attach the bag using a gasket to the back and it will fill up with the chips without the need for a vacuum. Total cost for that part should be sub $50

I just put in a watch on this planer last night. Really want to replace it with the helical head though as soon as I get it. The helical head dramatically drops the noise, and dramatically drops the snipe. The grizzly head is $400 on Amazon, and seems to have a better rating than the others.
