Microsoft has recently announced that the price of Xbox Live Gold is going up. The $60 1 year membership will now be $60 for a 6 month membership. If you are subscribed at the current rate they will honor a renew at your old price.
Retailers are now carrying the new $60 6 month cards. You can get ahead by stocking up on the old cards at their original price points being the price hike. This will make the gamepass trick more expensive too at the new price points, so now is the time.
I've provided a few good prices below. Take advantage while you can.
Costco: 2 years for $95.00

But Gold vs PS+ are about as identical as it gets. Personally find the game selections for PS+ better but I'm not really sure how you could argue they aren't pretty much identical except one is going to retail at 2x the price of the other.

i mean, it's a worth while post with such a stupid price hike...
looks like i'm not renewing my XBL accounts, pretty sure they've lapsed at this point anyway... i always find it amazing the console manufacturers (MS first, then Sony followed suite) get away with basically making you pay for your internet access twice. you know what you don't pay for on PC? to play with your friends
i miss the old PS3 days where this nonsense wasn't a thing... god damn M$
I think if you add Live and have Ultimate Game Pass, it converts automatically based on their ratio found in the link. For example, 2 years of Gold will convert to only 10 months of Ultimate Game Pass.

I am not sure if the 1 month of Ultimate for $1 deal is still available, but if it is stock up on the cheapest XBL cards you can find, then convert it to Ultimate for $1. Again, the previous sentence assumes that $1 for 1 month of Ultimate is still around. YMMV.
