I bought this on Black Friday, and I'm enjoying it just fine. I replaced the subwoofer without even trying the one that was included (after reading the reviews) and I'd say the overall sound quality is on par with any mid-range home theater in a box.

Note: The firmware installed is the most up-to-date available firmware, and is not available to download on their support site. If you try to update the firmware available on the website, you'll be downgrading, and have to contact support to get the most recent.

I have two complaints.

The USB Power Out will power your device, but it also creates noise in the speakers. I wouldn't plug my Amazon Fire Stick / Chromecast into the device for power.
You can either set up the speakers as 5.1 OR Atmos 3.1.2 (the rear speakers are meant to be installed on the wall as "height" speakers above the front speakers. Atmos doesn't use the rear speakers (However, as I don't own any Atmos content, I don't know if 5.1.2 capability has been added in the current firmware)
These systems are awesome as a first system, or good for a decent garage system. You'll run into disappointment when watching movies with explosions and big thumping bass lines.

But, like a gateway drug, this led me down a path to get bigger & better Onkyo systems EEK!.

This is basically a receiver with speakers that buy you some time until they are replaced. I've been shopping for new speakers since I bought it. That said, it makes sense as a start if you don't want to buy a good receiver and a good set of speakers all at once.

In terms of sound quality, how would this compare to a Logitech Z906?

That's tough to say, really. Do you have the original speakers with your 906, or have you replaced them with different speakers? The 906 is a great system, but probably limited in terms of connectivity. If you're wanting to use it for home theater, also have a game system plugged in, and some other streaming device, then this should be better. While the speakers with the 906 (originals with phase plugs) are good, they might not replicate sound as accurately as these should be able to. That really just comes down to the lack of a tweeter.

Personally I would stick to traditional home theater over 5.1 Ch PC speakers, but that's purely my opinion. The sound is ultimately going to be subjective. At the end of the day, the only person that has to like the sound of your system is you. If you're satisfied with what you have, keep it. As others have mentioned, you'll likely get bitten by the upgradeitis bug with these pretty quick. All things to consider.

I HATE my Onkyo receiver. Randomly disconnects from any network related source and will not reconnect without hard reset. Had it repaired under warranty and broke again out of warranty. Save your peace of mind, buy a different manufacturer.

And I love mine. Never had a problem whatsoever. So what's your point?

My 11 year 3300 running just fine. You must have gotten a defective unit.

Onkyo quality has declined over the years just like everything else. I have 3 Onkyo receivers.....one's 37 years old and the other two are 8. They all work fine but I have no doubt the newer receivers will fail first.
