Credit Karma Tax—is it really free?
Yes! Credit Karma Tax is always 100% free. It's $0 to file both state and federal tax returns. Even if you're taking deductions or credits, it won't cost you a penny, ever.
Free Tax USA is also another free federal tax software
Virginia used to allow you to easily file your taxes online for free, but tax software lobbied for them to get rid of it. Now they let you "fill out the form" online (basically a fillable PDF), but it used to be even easier.
Although I disagree that taxes are hard because of Turbo Tax. I mean come on, have you seen the tax code? Had a divorce? Had multiple jobs in a year? Moved? Lots of healthcare expenses? Invested in a limited partnership or commodities ETF without realizing it? Previous year carryovers? Seriously...

I know i should be talking to a tax adviser but this may be because HR block sucks. I have the software and last year i took out some of my 401k due to covid. I know you can split the 401k withdrawal between the next 3 years but HR block doesn't even ask about covid when I fill out the 401k portion or let me break it up... it leads me to a fat IRS tax bill (which I am ok with, but would like to split it up).
Whereas credit karma asks specifically about covid and 401k leading me to split it up and get a return....
now... does that mean I have to pay extra for the HR block special software they offer once i installed it and declined?
I've used credit karma since they started offering and it's been the best in regards to ease of use and getting a refund. I may just stick with it as opposed to the HR block.
