Great VPN. They recently released a statement with screenshots from websites that rate VPNs for money, and basically said they are no longer playing that game. That they would rather invest that money in the platform (because some of the sites were complaining that they could not make enough commission based on their sale prices).

Take that with a grain of salt or not, but if you don't find them on the rating sites for "top VPNs of 2020, 2021, 2022 etc., I can tell you that it's not because they are not worth it.

Before the pandemic I would have to travel to about 9-12 countries per year, and Windscribe never let me down. Easy interface, quick and stable connection, and also no logs being kept.

I was lucky to get a lifetime a few years ago, and they have been getting better and better. Since that's not being offered anymore, this is a great deal imho.

Wish they had the lifetime plans available again

Windscribe has worked great for me when I was in China and in Russia.

You're complaining about a price increase after getting 3 years of a VPN for like $35 of whatever it was last time?

You do realize that many other **quality** VPN providers charge a lot more right?

Nord, which I use, gets good reviews but the best "deal" I've seen for them in a while is $89 for only 2 years.

ExpressVPN, which to my knowledge also has good reviews, costs even more than Nord.

With the current pricing of their competitors, this seems like a great deal, assuming their service is on par with other providers.
for someone who uses a VPN once or twice a year and having to pay 2X the price every couple years . . . garbage deal. i am not about to foot the bill for others who use their VPN 24x7.

as with all in life, at the end of the day . . . all they are doing is opening the competition others . . . it's old story of Blockbuster vs Netflix . . . "pigs get slaughtered"

Not too versed on VPNs but I understand that a VPN can be setup through your home router (via OpenVPN). Is that viable compared to a VPN service like this? Advantages / disadvantages?
Depending on what you want from a VPN, if geo-restriction bypass is your main goal, setting up your own VPN works fine, but it also depends on the upload speed you get at home (Or wherever your VPN server is).

The main advantage of this services is the number of servers available, you don't have to troubleshoot connection issues, speed is pretty good compared to basic home internet speeds and if torrenting is something you do, you don't have to worry about getting a letter in the mail, since all traffic is routed to another server and no one can see your real IP (in theory)

Yes!

Yes, it's stackable, will just increase your renewal date by 3 years.
I would only use it on that . What else would it work for? Other than Netflix

My need is mixed, mainly for streaming geo-relocation (Netflix, Hulu, etc) and the other for torrent use (ideally with up to 1tb/month total use both combined). Will this work reasonably? If not, other recommendations welcomed.

To those wondering if they can watch Netflix contents from other countries using mobile - Yes you can. Just select "Location" on the VPN - note that not all VPNs allow this but Windscribe does a pretty good job I didn't have any problems selecting/watching Netflix contents from other country. You can also install the app on your Fire TV just search for Windscribe and log in your credentials.
unogs is the best site I know of to search for movies globally on netflix, just a tip for anyone who doesn't know.

My wife and I wanted to rewatch the harry potter movies and found them all on the various netflix global sites through there. Also, pretty much any time we think of a movie to watch, I search there first and I don't recall ever not finding what we wanted somewhere in the world, though a few times we caught stuff just as it was days away from being removed from the last available country, so we probably just got lucky with our movie choices.

I started having issues with Netflix not recognizing the "correct" country while being connected to a VPN but if you click the "watch" button on the unogs site, it somehow gets you to the correct region on your netflix app and the movie pops up. It seems that Netflix has gotten a bit better at geo-blocking lately so that button on their site has been very useful.

Decent service. Has its drawbacks. Such as "Boston" not producing a Boston IP address and teleporting you to Baltimore 9 times outta 10.
What's a better alternative, which gives you accurate location for extended period of time. Noticed nordvpn changes location after initial connection, to other vicinity areas or completely different.

You know there are also other choices right? On stack social (where this deal is), you can get a lifetime subscription to another VPN service called Keep Solid for $20 or you can make your own at home for free if you have the necessary components.

There are so many providers these days but it comes down to "you get what you pay for" in most cases. If you want a quality service, you have to pony up for it.

Edit: I was wrong, it's not $20, it's actually $14.50 for lifetime sub w/ coupon

Great VPN. Good price. Don't hate me for getting the Lifetime subscription back in the day for around $30.

It really depends on what you need it for. I set up my own OpenVPN on a server because I was tired of always getting recognized as a VPN user when I would go on to various US websites using NordVPN. I'm a dual resident (US/EU) and when I was in the EU, I would always have to fill out captcha after captcha for every little thing I wanted to do on a US site and it got really annoying after a while. Some sites would outright block me on both the VPN IP and foreign IP, so my own "personal" VPN did the trick for those few rare exceptions.

It has worked great for that purpose but the downside is that if you create your own, you only have access to that one region (in your case, your home IP), so if you are trying to watch content in other countries, you will either have to rent a server and set up your own OpenVPN service in each country you are interested in, which can get costly, or you subscribe to a service like this that has servers all over the world.

Also, your speeds on a commercial VPN service can be a bit slower because there are lots of people using the same server as you, but again, with your own server, you only have access to one location. If you set up your own at home, then you would also have access to your local network while away from home, so you could access files or your printer or whatever else you have set up on your home network.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages but really it depends on what you need it for. I'm also not an expert in this topic but that should cover the basic differences, though I'm sure others here have more knowledge on the subject.
