I could have ignored the low brightness display, but not in combination with soldered 8GB.

Don't understand why anyone is producing laptops with soldered 8GB currently. It is the minimum amount of RAM in a current machine. Either don't solder or at least put 16GB in so a machine is good for a long time.

When you solder ram, you just create more E waste.

I'm pretty sure that this kind of Ram has to be soldered in order to keep it in place (maybe becuase pins are so short?) . But I agree that 16gb Ram would not up the price that much so that would be smarter move for manufacturers even in budget laptops

Yup...when you see LPDDR it is ALWAYS non-user upgradeable...

Not a bad deal....but I would be worried about being limited to 8gb forever....
Ryzen 7 would seem to be more applicable to a Power User.....who may need more ram.

If it was 8gb LDDR with a lower tier CPU at a lower cost.....for someone who is not a power user...may make more sense....

Agree with others that 16GB is better if you are more of a power user....

Bought this as a refurb about 2 months ago after reading the great reviews. Sent it back and waited for a 2 in 1 to go on sale. Ended up with a Asus 15.6 Q507IQ 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce MX350 - 256GB SSD - Light Grey from Bestbuy on sale for $650 a week or so ago. Fits my needs. Haven't tested it with games yet. But besides the 2 in 1 design I also Love the touch screen.

This looks like it might be right up my alley...

I usually spend ~$400-$500 on an off-lease Latitude 13" or 14" every 3 or 4 years. I've been looking at refurb and off-lease 5490/5491s and 7490s with 8th-gen i5 and 8gb/256gb. A touch more for this with a 2x faster CPU, 2x SSD, and thinner/lighter/smaller might stretch my 3-4 year cycle to 5 years, even with the limited RAM. I'm not a power user anymore, considering buying a little higher on the performance curve than I usually do and getting a little more life out of it. The size/weight/thickness are big selling points, especially compared to the chunky (but durable) 5490/5491 and even the more svelte (but still durable) 7490.

i think AMD dedicates 1-2GB RAM to iGPU, while Intel can more or less share between CPU and iGPU. So, AMD is crippled if you compare to equivalent Intel when RAM is 8GB or less.

Ryzen 7 4700U + 8GB DDR4 is good enough for 80% of the population who would use this laptop for 5+ years without complaining about the non-expandable RAM.

Don't buy this laptop! I got last year's version of it and the hinge broke 2 months after the warranty expired. I treated it like a baby, especially since I couldn't go anywhere because of the pandemic. Looking at Acer's forums, it's a common problem. One guy had his broken well within the warranty period and they didn't honor it because it "could've been caused by accidental damage."

It's also impossible to fix. The hinge is held in place only by a thin (~3mm) line of epoxy bonded to the faceplate, which is just a thin piece of foil. Furthermore, you have hot exhaust blowing directly on the joint. Nowhere enough surface area to make your own solid joint. And even if you did, I doubt the faceplate would hold up for very long.

my stupid 5 yr old Dell XPS 13, which I like a lot and works fine, now cannot charge due to Dell's stupid "charger check" inside pin on the barrel charger. Tried multiple chargers and also just replaced the DC port. So only can use plugged in.

SOOOOO now I need to spend some money to buy a replacement. Wife mostly uses, and mostly for internet although some Word here and there. I am about to pull trigger on the Costco version of this Acer Swift 3 @ $550. I am also here on Slickdeals to check what better "deals" I can get. I want thin and light. Don't really care about 2 in 1 I guess. Want to spend lowest money possible and still get a decent machine. WANT USB-C CHARGING IF POSSIBLE or at least a normal barrel charger that doesn't have the stupid sense pin that stops working and charger is not recognized as "authentic" and so refuses to charge battery.

Where did you get these off-lease ones? Ebay or some other sites? Maybe also I look at ebay or Facebook marketplace for something like an XPS13 that has USB-C charging? This Acer seems good although screen apparentlly somewhat dim.

Ryzen doesn't get along well with LP (low power) RAM. Low power Ryzen laptops have latency issues, and laptops with Ryzen 5 and regular RAM do better than laptops with Ryzen 7 and low power RAM

All OEMs are hoping that in couple years, all laptops will have non replaceable/upgradble anything on a laptop. It is money driven. Slighlty cheaper to manufacture and no cheap upgrades will probably mean more new machines sales.

Vote with your wallet is the only way to tell them we don't like that.
