This was $145 at Staples with coupons a couple of days ago, and is $139 in store at microcenter of you have one nearby. For any of those prices it's a good deal, if you can find a decently priced motherboard, that is. Inexpensive 400 series boards have been in short supply. The good news is that 500 series boards are coming out soon, and they should support RAM overclocking too.
I've been using a 10400f with a an RTX 2080ti, and for 4k 60hz gaming, typical productivity and light content creation, it's essentially indistinguishable from any chip that's available, even ones that cost 2-3 times as much. Unless you're doing heavy multithreaded rendering tasks, or are targeting 90+ FPS in games, this CPU is tough to beat.

Yes, I'm building a friend's gaming PC with this since Microcenter has no stock of anything reasonable under $200.
This will do fine compared to a Ryzen if it could be found for the acceptable price, only because my friend has games, nothing that REALLY utilizes 8cores. 6 cores will do fine for gaming.

Yep, getting this at MC. Good info and I think your assessment is spot on. Always turned off by the NEED MOAR COARS or GOTTA UPGRADE MY MOBO TO $100 more!
When it does not net most people FPS except the feeling that they are "optimizing" their rig. Which to each their own, I look at people who like the OSX experience like that... you get something shiny. But not value to me.
That's old hardware I would spend the extra $50 for the latest generation over the old one for a new build
$50 extra on one part is a lot for a budget build especially when you could put that money into a better GPU with their crazy prices. The closer you get to $200 the easier it is to just get a 3600. In 20 years I've never used another processor on my original board for that socket and the difference between the 300 and 400 series Intel boards are negligible for most (budget) builders.
Example, last build for a friend who had a case/PSU:
82.99 1TB Intel 665p NVMe SSD M.2 2280 (Newegg)
53.99 OLOy 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200mhz (Newegg)
64.99 ASRock B450M PRO4 AM4 (Newegg)
14.14 Tax for RAM/Mobo/SSD (Newegg)
8.00 Windows 10 Pro (OEM key)
107.00 Ryzen 3 3100 (ebay)
100.00 4GB XFX RX580 (used)
26.70 AX WiFi/Bluetooth Card (Amazon)

Every generation Intel just made little improvement to release so called new generation to make quick money and let makers to release "new" version of their machines. But now they're facing big challenge.
Most people don't need the integrated graphics, but I'm using it to build a VMware lab, so needed this one. Great price on both CPUs.
I think the otherwise. Most people, which I mean non-hardcore-gamers, don't need graphics card, integrated is enough for most tasks and even casual gaming and save big money for other accessories.
During the years I stopped playing serious games, I simply lived with my laptops with external 24"/30" monitor for work and everyday use.
