I ordered my current computer from this company. Had to RMA it within the first month due to motherboard failure, but it works well enough now. Three points I'll note:

1. Horrible customer service. The owner, Ken, seems to just run everything himself. He is not cordial, or prompt in his responses (often had to email 2-3x before a response). He falsely advertised a fingerprint reader in my current laptop, and when I said it doesn't have one, his response was essentially, "oops, typo."

2. It took over a month to get my computer when there were not parts shortages. Expect to wait a while even once this computer becomes available.

3. I tried using the cash discount and paying by CC last time. The order went through, but Ken contacted me asking, "so you're going to send me a wire transfer or money order?" even though I had clearly already paid, and forced me to cancel my order and re-order.

Edit: This is all to say, while not the ABSOLUTE worst experience one could have, I'd be pretty hesitant to order from GenTech again.

You're going to leave your personal gaming laptop on 24/7? I would barely consider doing this with my 3080 desktop, and I have the coolest running card and case you can buy. You're going to shorten the lifespan of something, inevitably. For me, it would just be the gpu fan in all likelihood if the psu is operating at less than 50-60%. But still, barely worth it imo, even at these all time highs.

Pros don't do this on a small scale basis for a reason. They do it on rigs with multiple GPUs per motherboard. They just care about yields, not the longevity/condition of the parts. If you're going to be using this laptop for personal use + maybe even some business, mining on it for the entirety of the time it's not in use otherwise maybe isn't the best idea...

Just a heads up about GenTechPC

1)They don't indicate if things are on backorder so your order might be stuck in "processing" with no notification or shipping date range available.

2)In some cases the thermal paste that is offered as a addon is already the thermal paste included by the OEM.

3)They charge your card immediately even if they don't know when/if they will receive inventory.

4)They charge a 6% credit card transaction fee for cancelations.

5) I called support, they don't identify themselves and ask who is calling. I'm pretty sure this company is a guy working out of his garage or something.

You're right about heat dissipation and that's exactly the cause. All you've are some blower fans in laptop. Even on desktop the rtx 3080 throttles because the gddr6x hits 104-106 degrees while mining. The core temps might be even in low 45-48C. The ethash mining specifically stresses the memory controller (100%) and memory chips all the time. This isn't the typical workload during games. I am not saying it would go bad in very short time.

Yea, IRS states to declare and of course they want a piece when you sell it for higher profits too. Smilie
The standard deduction does not apply to a small business, so if you are set up as a contractor (for example, I'm a software development contractor outside of my full-time salaried job and do occasional side gigs), you can deduct any income, including crypto-related income, that you make as a contractor including home office expenses and the cost of new compute equipment. Not sure whether this tax rule applies to hobbyist income, though.

The IRS treats crypto as property, so if you buy crypto and hold it for over a year (say, 13 months) then sell it for a profit, you can report it as a long term capital gain (LTCG), and the rate for LTCG is either 0, 15, or 20%, depending on your ordinary income tax bracket, unless you trigger a minimum alternative tax.

I'm not a tax attorney or CPA, so if any of my comments are incorrect or outdated, I will fall back on the excuse, "That's what I've learned from TurboTax and by reading tax lawyers' blogs and IRS tax law documents."

absolutely. Laptops (especially 15" laptops) are just too small to cram a 10key on it as well, and it off-centers the entire keyboard layout and trackpad as well. This is one of things that's totally preference, I've used computers my entire life for work and play and hardly ever use the 10 key, but then I don't do a lot of spreadsheet or cpa related work

Can't find much info on the new Legion 5 Pro's, but the specs on the starting $999 pro model seem to be: Ryzen 5 5600H, RTX 3060,QHD 165Hz IPS + G-Sync, 2000GB SSD, 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz. Seems too good to be true so heres my guess; Theyre gonna make about 10 of them and the bots will snatch them up or they'll jack up the price. I'm not talking about personal deductions, which is "standard" or "itemized". When you have a business, any direct costs directly offset your revenue, such as cost of goods sold, rent, the company car, etc. Those aren't deductions, they're operating expenses, and they're calculated on Schedule C. If you drive for Uber/Lyft for example, you deduct vehicle operation expenses from your revenue, whether you're taking standard or itemized personal deductions.

Unfortunately you do have to pay the mandatory self-employment tax unless you have an LLC or something set up. Shouldn't be too big of an issue if you're just trying to recoup the hardware investment, HR Block or Tax cut would do all the calculations for you. And there's QBI for sole proprietorships to further lower taxable (business) income by 20%.

Also, deductions for hobbies are no longer allowed since 2018 anyway.

This another personal preference, but I can't game on a laptop keyboard because it annoys me to play with the screen off-centered to the left, since the mouse is on the right side. If I center the screen in front of me, then the left wrist is at an odd angle and could cause long term issues.

So I use a gaming keypad for the left hand. the laptop is centered, and my left and right hands are both comfortably situated, equal distance apart.
