tl;dr: You don't need magnetically shielded speakers for PC use.

I think somewhere along the way you got it mixed up what the magnetic shielding in loudspeakers is intended for. It's not to prevent audio quality distortion from outside in the speaker itself. The signals within the speaker are high power and the internal magnets are very powerful, so external magnetic field impact on them is negligible. What the magnetic shielding is for is to prevent the powerful magnets in the speaker from affecting the CRT-based displays (either home TV or PC monitor), which are sensitive to external magnetic fields, and in the worst case, a part of the display can become permanently magnetized, distorting the picture quality even if the external source of the magnetic field is no longer present. That's what the built-in degauss feature is for that some CRT displays have.

But since we no longer primarily use CRT-based displays, magnetic shielding in speakers is no longer that important. The magnetic field from speakers is also not strong enough to be a problem for HDDs either in case you're wondering.

Yes. You'd need an amplifier of some kind, whether it be a home theater receiver or a mini amp like one of the following:

Technically they can be used with a desktop BUT it would require a separate amp and it would be a cumbersome setup and overkill.
For PCs, it is best to use smalled powered speakers.

Overrated.
Just curious if you actually had them to audition to make claim like this.
YouTube reviews are one thing, but real life experience different.
and how about this reviews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apij3Y0A1RQ

Not the best finish on them, but for the sale price and SQ it's good deal.
They are my daily beater from the last deal.Have no regrets buying and keeping.

A lot of people use their computer as a media center. For them it would not be overkill.

Not so, I have tried several top rated speakers ranging from $300 to $1000 and returned all but the bro 3. these are one of the best you will find under $1000 so $350 is a steal.

Agree to disagree. For many people their desktop is their primary listening station. I have a pair of LS50 on my desktop and an VS SB2000 under the desk. It's about as close to a fortress of solitude that I can have now with 3 children. While this may be overkill for you, it won't be for others.

OK, point taken.
I was going by my personal opinion that for desktop PC the setup that would sense to me would be...

2.0 [amazon.com]

2.1 [razer.com]

5.1 [amazon.com]

Upper Level 5.1
[newegg.com]

But to each his own.
I recall when I was in the electronic business. I came across a guy that felt it was imperative to use 200-watt JBL 580's for TH surrounds ??!!!

Lol, I'll admit I'm pretty prejudiced about speakers and for whatever reason, never gave much bother about the kef's. Probably because of the (high)prices, lol.

That said, don't think "I" have read a bad word about any kef, lately. They seem to be among the cream of the crop.

i had those speaker, they are fine for the price, but a better deal is to look for used condition BR03, as i recall they can be had for around 250 or even below 200 if you don't care much about the cosmetics.

my problem, however, had to do with a lot of paid advertisement on youtube. if you do a youtube search, you will find comments of video like this is the best pair of speaker or something like that. now i don't have ten thousand dollar system drive those speakers (and this may just be my mistake), but in my limited testing, i don't find those speaker to be better than, say KEF Q350 (which is what i end up keeping), they do have better bass response than Q150, but about on pair with Diamond 11.2 (that can be had for 199). the craftsmanship is also lacking for the MSRP, however, they do have some of the nicer binding post.

for my ears, i rate them on the same level as diamond 11.2. cosmetically speaking, diamond 11.2 blew it away. performance wise, Q150 is better in imaging and staging but lack in bass. get Q350 and call it day.

btw, i use them for my desktop speakers. i don't think either would work good enough for large HT use

Lol yeah I'm not that bad. For surrounds I'm a firm believer in getting the least expensive bookshelves that fit your room aesthetic. Spend money on integrated, front stage, and sub(s). But hey someone will pull a me and say I'm wrong and that's totally ok Smilie.
