$100 for internet just as bad as cable companies.
Just ask for a quote for the cable company to run service out to your rural address. Have neighbors that have been quoted $30-60K.

For most rural areas in the US, 4G and 5G and higher in the future will be the broadband answer rather than satellite. Elon can move the market but often under-delivers in his promises. There is no indication yet that this technology can scale even at 10% of ground cellular network. The paradox of Elon is that he advocates certain ideals and then often go ahead and do the opposite to make money - for example he wants clean energy for the world then he goes ahead and buys bitcoins which has a cost of production estimated to generate between 22 and 22.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

Humor is nice, but burning hundreds of millions in cash is a total waste of money. there will not be a mars colony, starship will not make it to mars with 100 people. hate going off topic in the thread but this stuff needs to be debunked before people actually believe anything elon musk says.

I see people mentioning cell plans but everytime I've looked including today I don't see any without limits. T-mobile / sprint are not options where I live. Please give me a specific data only plan without a cap that runs on AT&T or Verizon network. I don't see one.

it's more supply and demand. BTC and DOGE have way more value than USD

There are people who live in the boonies who pay ISP's 400k, 20k, or other absurd amounts to have fiber run the last mile or a quarter mile or even a couple hundred yards to their houses.

This service is for THOSE type of people, for them it could be a steal.

For almost anyone who can get land or wireless internet, it doesn't make sense. And it was never meant too, the capacity of these satellites is not all that much bandwidth, they physically cant support signing up a lot of people in urban area. This is for the maybe 5% of America with no good options. And they'll pay more. Launching thousands of satellites isn't cheap I'd assume.

There are gray-area ATT iPad unlimited plans for 20 a month, and tons of other shenanigans, but thats a whole nother ball of wax with a learning curve to navigate. If you're interested I suggest you get ta googling and facebooking. There's a FB group called LTE hacks with info, but again it can be a pretty steep learning curve.

For Verizon a big one people do is visible, which I believe is unlimited but capped at 5 mbps after a certain amount of data. But 5 mbps is a lot better than nothing.

So it seems to me that starlink is the best offering for rural locations. Maybe some people don't mind that lte rigamarole but I'm guessing most would pay extra to not have to deal with it.
Right now my parents pay nearly the same price for 12/1 dsl and most of the time get half that with huge latency spikes. 5mbps isn't good enough to stream anything. I signed up for starlink at their address and it can't come soon enough.

Here's hoping Tmobile's 5G home internet turns out OK/usable.

it seems to be rolling out everywhere. i was able to try it recently. it seemed decent. i really like how you dont have to deal with janky routers and coax cable mess. OTOH the service can be a little hitchy and for me was 60-90 mbps, vs my cableco 400 mbps and you can get 1gb.

overall since my cable company are crooks and screwed me again (they lowered my bill from ~100+ to 49.50 to undercut Tmo, told me that was for 12 months, but this month literally the 2nd month back silently already increased my bill to $60), i'm probably gonna be back with tmo soon enough!
