"OTARD rules do not apply to common areas that are owned by a landlord, a community association or jointly by condominium owners. These common areas may include the roof or exterior walls of a multiple dwelling unit."

So, if you live in an apartment building, unless you have a balcony, you can't install a satellite on the roof or the fire escape.

I can't believe this, too much hype for a product without any guaranteed level of service with unbelievable contracts. They only need your money NOW for nothing !!!
Many can't get fast, reliable internet with existing ISPs. This is for them.

Agreed some rural areas only have hughes net (shit) so this would be a good alternative if people can afford it

"unbelievable contracts"

Look at Hughes/Viasat, no minimum speed (I don't know of many rural ISPs that guarantee a minimum, even dsl in town says "up to", and can't reliably stream audio), 24 month contract with etf on day 1. How is Starlink's "worse"? Deposit now, that gives them an idea of the number of serious buyers when available.

I'd be willing to pay all of this with some guarantees. However, currently they talk about random outages. I'm disabled and can't get out much, so the Internet is literally a huge part of my life.

Just to address the 4G/5G stuff - I see NONE of those home offerings in my area. They are targeting metropolitan areas where they don't actually need the service rather than the rural areas that do. It wasn't 7 years ago the only option here was a dial-up modem! IN THE USA! Companies took the rural broadband money and pocketed it and just keep giving false hope to anyone who lives where you stream a movie by starting it, pausing ti, walking away for a few hours and then hopefully being able to watch it without buffering every 2 minutes.

I would LOVE 5G or even 4G home but they are not offered. I will not do all the "hacks" to try and get true unlimited as I don't need the hassle. Starlink is providing the service. It is here, NOW (for some but more than the cellular home service is) and will be worldwide within a year I believe. Cell phone companies could have done 4G home for YEARS and they didn't due to the amount of money they can charge on mobile devices compared to stationary since they have actual competition in the stationary market.

As far as the IPO. I said it before, maybe in this thread, Starlink will fail if cellular companies open up nationwide home service with unlimited data (TRUE UNLIMITED) at 4G or 5G speeds and Starlink doesn't lower pricing. I think Starlink should be giving the equipment for free in that $100 a month plan and should seriously think about lowering that price quickly once the cell companies push for home users. There are not enough places that do not get cell phone coverage that could pay for all those satellites if everyone jumps to a 5G home service for $50 a month. I would be VERY leery on the IPO (I am no professional what-so-ever so take it or leave it) due to the timing and availability of 4g/5g home.
Where I live so many people out of town don't even get cell at there house and Hughes net cost a lot and still doesn't always work.I have a friend with kids in online school this year who has to drive them to town every day for the last year because they can't even get Hughes net or cell serotonin do online sch. My parents town by the Canadian boarder is to far away for more then one company to offer internet because there's not enough people that live there for them to make money. We have been signed up for star link for over a year and still not invited, hoping we'll get it with the deposit because we don't have cell or internet at our cabin.

Downtime varies by location, but is becoming less and less as more satellites go up. They are tweaking the system, so reports on reddit show a little bit now and then for that. And sometimes, there aren't any satellites in range, depending, and if you have an obstruction in view. Some are reporting very little downtime, some a few seconds a day, some a few minutes. It really doesn't look like a lot, depending on area, and it is improving literally all the time. You can look here https://satellitemap.space/ and see the satellites, the coverage areas aren't accurate, but you can see some gaps. You can click on the gears and select "active" satellites to sort out ones that are just launched/not working.

Driving to town. About 5 years ago, the closest internet that worked with streaming was in town, 60 mile round trip. The neighbor took classes there every day. Nothing but cellular or current satellite here (and not very upgraded areas, both extremely congested, don't see 5Mbps with either). DSL in the village (15 miles, population about 200, one, one checkout grocery store) can't stream audio reliably, let alone video. Anyway, few have internet that works. So, the schools never shut down this school year. There was a surge in cases earlier, I suspect that was the main cause. But, relatively few now, less than 10 new a week in over a couple thousand square miles. Restrictions are mostly lifted now, not that there were many anyway, masks were never required, hospital capacity was never a concern here.

I have between zero and very worst case maybe 3 mins downtime a day. I've had Starlink since November and the downtime is about half what it was when I first got setup. It's usually only a second or two at a time, not enough to even interrupt watching Netflix. Looking at the diagnostics I've had 39 seconds downtime in the last 12 hours.

Exactly. While not enough to make good business sense, thousands who live in Alaska have terrible, terrible, internet options.

This will put them all out of business overnight. I'd be pretty concerned if I was a local ISP, putting millions of dollars (from federal contracting and related), to see the real possibility of going belly up.
