I think this is a poor deal. It only takes 100k points this year to earn a companion pass for the rest of this year and all of 2022. Sign up for 1 business and 1 personal Southwest card and you're golden.
How much flying are you actually going to do before 2/2022? I definitely want to do a companion pass offer, but not one that expires right when I'd want to start using it!
Eh, as someone who has played the Companion Pass game for a while, this is just sort of "meh". Traditionally it's been good for the remainder of the calendar year, plus the entire following year. So if you get it by, say, March of 2021, you'd have it through the end of 2022. The total spent on purchases was about the same ($3k on one, and $2k on the other maybe?).

For this to work, you have to spend $5k within 3 months (not that easy to do, at least for me), and then you have to wait for the next billing cycle before you get your Companion Pass, and then it's only good till February of next year. And you only get 30,000 points whereas previously you'd get 50k (or 40k and 60k) per card.

That being said, they currently raised the threshold for the Companion Pass to 125k miles, so you would have needed to open more than 2 cards (and pay the resulting annual fees). So I guess this is decent if you want a Companion Pass? Wouldn't have minded having this available a month ago when we had to replace our furnace and AC (yay, $8k on a credit card!), but otherwise it doesn't really seem like that big of a deal. $5k is a lot to drop in only 3 months.

Can you still earn companion pass for the next year as well if you open a business card and spend enough to reach the limit normally needed to earn companion pass?

Buy gift cards for places that you know you'll use, grocery, gas, etc. Try and use rr shopping.

The only reason I don't like this deal is to how lousy it is to fly with Southwest. There is no first class or anything remotely more comfortable of you pay more. When you pay more, you're paying to board first to have your pick of seats. Pretty shitty.

And I have pretty much the opposite reaction with Southwest - unless you are paying/redeeming for domestic 1st class (kind of a waste except for JetBlue Mint), flying with Southwest is notably better than the competition (particularly AA and United - Delta is pretty good).

If you're willing to pay more, you're not flying Southwest. I'm not willing to pay more.

First class flights to Hawaii seem to run about $1000. I paid $300 on Southwest... to fly my whole family using two companion passes.

So I saved $3700. That was worth it to me.

So people are aware - this isn't just get the CC and you get the companion pass. There is also a $5,000 in 3 month minimum spend. So you'll actually get a total of 35,000 points, but still, a pretty big min. spend.
It was easy to me without any extra spend. Just my monthly recurring bills.

As others stated with limited travel right now wait for a better offer. I got the 60K miles last year as well. I'm at over 100K thanks to this reward card. So I have tons of "free" flights built up.

No tax filing paperwork requirements? Good to know. Really awkward running a almost 7 figure business entirely through personal credit cards because my credit is mediocre because I keep maxing out cards with transactions lol.
If you're doing that much business, you're probably exposed to enough personal liability to set up an LLC. BUT if you're paying for business things with personal cards, even the laziest of attorneys can "pierce the corporate veil" and get directly at your assets by arguing that there's no functional difference between the company's assets and your own.

Get a DUNS number for your business (it's the business equivalent of a credit agency) and get that sorted quick!

I do have an LLC, and have no choice on the personal cards. Have never been approved for a business card before.

Will look into the DUNS number, thank you for the advice Smilie

I'd say most of the people who aren't flying are the sheep.

Has anyone received their Companion Pass yet? I'm curious how long it will take after spending the $5k.
