I would say a bad thing. These are larger than iron plates. They are only 33lbs each but already appear to be big and can't add any more plates to it. 33lbs is not that much. Not sure about durability either. Concrete is brittle, iron is not. Accuracy might be an issue as well (e.g. getting incorrect weight for the whole dumbbell)
Bought these last month (the 105 pound version) and returned them. These dumbbells and plates are HUGE. Extremely bulky, and the plates have weird residue that constantly sheds and gets all over everything. Adjusting the weight and changing plates is a workout in itself (you have to spin the screw clamps/collars for several minutes).
For obvious reasons, there's no return shipping so you have to lug these into a Walmart to return them. Not worth the hassle.
Personally going to wait a few more months as the market continues to get over saturated with fitness gear and find a good set on sale.

These are perfect for people that just want to buy weights that make them feel like they're gonna start working out. No need to spend $400 to make some bowflex or powerblocks get dusty.
As far as other systems go, I bought ironmasters and gave my bowflex to my mother a few years ago, now I wish I had them back. Ironmasters are tough and great for bigger stuff but I wish I still had the bowflex for doing curls and changing weights quickly. Got my eyes open for a deal on the powerblocks or bowflex or whatever simple quick change system pops up

Is that the best time to buy, then? I've been looking to start a workout routine since I've just been laid off due to covid.
Not a good time to buy. There's a shortage and purchase limits at dicks and Walmart. I just bought a CAP 30lb dumbell from amazon yesterday for 60$. I need it for physical therapy. Should be 1$ per pound. Avg cost right now is double that

Last April I decided to wait it out until I could go back to the gym or prices came back down to earth. Started doing bodyweight fitness stuff in the meantime. Bodyweight stuff is effective and free, but for me it doesn't spark joy that heavier resistance training does.
So yeah, maybe I overpaid for some equipment now compared to what it *might* be in a few months but those extra few months I get to train are worth it to me.

Just a heads up.. I ordered the CAP dumbell set from Walmart a couple of weeks ago when they were on sale. Same concrete design, same exact plastic exterior. Well guess what? Somewhere along the way, one of the shippers must have gotten pissed off that they had to move a 40lb box and they must have CHUCKED the entire box. As I opened it at home, one of the 7 pound weights was cracked open and the DISGUSTING smell of wet mildewish concrete was all over the rest of the weights as well as concrete sand all over the bottom of the box as well as all over the rest of the weights. I had to return that set and it was a pain in the ass to clean up and the smell will haunt me forever. PLEASE if you can, pick these up IN STORE. DO NOT OPT FOR SHIPPING AS YMMV in regards to how they handle the box during freight with these concrete filled weights.
Steel prices are going up. This is going to carry over to the consumer. If you're going to try to wait it out, I'm guessing you'll be waiting another 6 months to a year.
I've had terrible experience with Walmart shipping heavy items. I bought a olympic weight bar that was basically an empty box with a hole in it, they still had me ship back the box for refund and I ended up having to credit card chargeback because I never heard back. I have a 25lb set of dumbbells similar to this and when it arrived one of the weight plates was a little cracked but I kept it and it sprinkles out cement like dust whenever I use it.

But, it is definitely the best adjustable dumbbell. Easy to adjust by twisting the handle.
