This is considered to be one of the best Arcteryx jackets for those who are fans of the dead birds.

It's comfortable in 40degree weather with activity. Toasty at 50. Known to shed heat well. It is the replacement to the venerated Atom LT because of this function: the duality of warmth but shedding warmth with activity. Much better per reviews in outdoor gear labs and etc

At time of deal posting 10 mediums in stock in black >Now Proteus XL, XXL, Black L

Hope this helps someone. I would jump on this if I hadn't already purchased a month ago

Check the reviews and can decide for yourself. People who wear Arcteryx I think want the best.

The reviews both professional and individual for those owning both proton and atom, all speak to how their new go to is not the atom but the proton, although to be fair, they are built for different purposes.

Atom is for idle heat. People complain it warms too much with activity.

Proton is for staying warm yet dumping heat once you're active. That duality is just amazing engineering.

Proton LT is thicker than FL, hence I gave my temperature ratings. FL is plenty warm for me here in 40s to 50s in so cal. Can't imagine wanting a jacket that's any warmer like the Atom for me.
Entire country buys SUVs to haul groceries not for off-roading
I spent too much money on dead bird already. But tempted.

I'm kind of confused about what difference it makes if you use this walking down a trail or walking down the street?

Unless you're mountaineering or rock climbing then you're just walking like everyone else.

I guess the big difference is that hikers don't have the luxury of bailing if their jacket fails them and they have to rely on it for long periods of time, but at the end of the day we are purchasing the jackets for the same reasons, its lightweight, its warm, its comfortable, and it has a great warranty.

Those benefits don't diminish if you're walking on a sidewalk vs dirt path.
Also frequently missed in these discussions - people can and do use their gear for different activities.
I winter hike / camp and when not a pandemic go shopping.
You could see me doing either activity and come up with a totally different take on how I use my gear and if I am a poser or not.

Thanks, this is really helpful, next time hopefully I can jump on a small.
sorry i forgot to mention that i don't have this particular jacket but i wear small for the kyanite and atom ar jackets. sizing is mostly consistent except i think that for their shells and parkas, you want to order 1 size down usually

Proton line up is what forced me to replace entire outerwear line up in my closet... Thank goodness sizes are gone, as I didn't need another Proton.

Is this a legit site? Saw some ads like this on FB, suspect this could be a scam/knock off

Saw some other sizes come back in stock for a short while. Was able to snag a medium proteus. Would suggest folks check the page periodically. Looks like things go in and out of stock. Thanks op!

People, enjoy your life. If you like their clothing and find value in it, buy it (if you can afford it).

Practical people can't see past $$ in life.

This is actually why I like my arc'teryx gear. It's functional when I'm backpacking, but also looks good when worn casually.

That's interesting. I guess ymmv but my wife and I have five dead bird jackets. They run medium for all of them.

Fission SV, Gamma LT, Venta AR, (first three shells outer) Atom LT, Proton FL, and also have Rho LT base layers full set.

The un-insulated Alpha and Beta shell jackets are sized larger since they are typically worn with a mid-layer jacket like the Atom underneath. The Fission, Gamma and Venta are all lightly insulated jackets meant to be worn by themselves with perhaps a base-layer on and not with an Atom or Proton jacket as a mid-layer (as they won't fit if not sized up). Now if you were to wear an Alpha SV with a t-shirt underneath, then buy a size smaller. Arcteryx is mainly an activity wear clothing and it's all about layering properly not this 1-jacket keep-you-warm while you're standing still waiting for the bus in -20 degrees🤐

I don't have one of those but those seem to be true-to-size (meaning not meant to layer up). Looks like that is Arcteryx's attempt as a urban fashion jacket/parka.
