Are these quieter than blade grinders? Looking for a gift for my father and my mom hates how loud his 30 year old blade grinder is.

Depends on what you're using it for. I believe I've read that the forte is an upgrade, but the virtuoso is a great value for it's price. Assuming you aren't doing espresso and don't have a big case of upgrade-itis... probably stay where you are unless you are noticing that your coffee grind size isn't consistent/extracting evenly.

The encore is just as loud as any other grinder I have owned. Not sure about the others.

I suggest you listen to some of them on youtube videos. I know James Hoffmann usually does a sound check when comparing grinders. We used to have a crappy cuisinart grinder (~50 bucks) and it was loud and awful. Both our Sette 270 (for espresso) and Virtuoso (for everything else) are much quieter and tolerable... but still loud.

After using a Preciso for a few years, I have a really hard time recommending Baratza. I had to replace a broken frame, adjustment ring, and top burr holder while also just living with a timer knob that would fall off. I stopped short of doing the gearbox upgrade, though my grinder would likely have benefit from it as it had the original metal gear.

While their support is indeed top notch, the frequency that I and many other people need/needed it is just way too high. If you are mostly brewing Aeropress, drip, or immersion then I'd suggest a Capresso Infinity with a 20% Bed Bath & Beyond coupon. My co-workers and I put 200+ pounds of coffee a year through the one in our break room and it never made a fuss.

If you are looking for a home espresso grinder, then there isn't a ton of good grinders in the sub-$600 mark, so I understand the appeal of these refurbs, but definitely go in knowing that the price of these grinders comes at the cost of reliability and potential frustration.

Depends if it's for espresso or brewed coffee. For brewed coffee the virtuoso is great.

currently have the Vario for espresso...how is the Sette 270 compared to it? would it be much of an upgrade or a waste of money?

Quiet is not Baratza's strong suite IMO. To stay in this price range they have to use more plastic parts, so noise is high.

Low noise grinders typically have metal encasing around the motor to contain the noise levels, but that easily increases the price.

Given I grind for under 10 second for making espresso, I don't mind the loud noise, but apparently the grind quality, atleast for espresso, is quite good compared to other grinders at this price point.

I'm currently using the Breville SGP. It's ok for a starter espresso grinder, but I often find my ideal setting between steps. I'm upgrading to the Sette 270 since it has infinite micro-adjustment between the 30 macro grind settings.

I jump the gun and bought a sette 270 without doing any homework. It's only good for espresso machines. It's too fine for drip coffee and French presses. If anybody could recommend an espresso machine it would be appreciated.

2 big thumbs up for Baratza customer service. I've had my Sette 270 for 4 years and they still cover all issues including the mother board and the motor just last week. Free of charge.

Damn, if you're jumping the gun on a 300 dollar grinder, it makes sense to just throw in a espresso machine while you're at it lol

Id go with vario, I have a sette 270 and its just not reliable ie ive had it replaced entirely once and the whole motor assembly replaced on another instance
I've had the same experience - I got one when it first came out and had it replaced once, and several internal major parts (circuit board, motor assembly, etc) replaced too. I will say that Baratza's customer service is top notch. They haven't charged me for any of these things, even years out of warranty. That alone has kept me buying their grinders.
