For example, if the refund amount is $1000, you can indicate $500 to be refunded to you as cash and $500 towards Amazon giftcard. The bonus amount will then be $500 x 3.5% = $17.50. So you will receive an Amazon giftcard in email for the amount of $517.50. And the cash portion ($500) will be deposited to the bank account you indicate.
If you don't plan to get the refund as Amazon giftcard, there will not be any bonus amount, unfortunately. Also, if you don't have a refund (if you owe them more tax for the taxyear), you can't get to the bonus either.
