Some games require quick movement of the mouse. Based on this and the surface below the mousepad, the pad can shift, requiring you to move it back into place, potentially while playing a game where distraction can get you "killed". Having a larger pad that's also under the keyboard can stop shifting.
You also don't have to worry about going over the edge of the pad with these quick movements when its bigger.
It can help prevent scratches on the desk surface from the keyboard.
It can be a matter of style and a way to customize your gaming rig.
These are nice mouse pads and worth it on sale. Best part is it is one of the few Corsair products that doesn't require you to install their awful iCue software.

I often see generic alternatives for much cheaper. Got 2 of my generic ones for $12 total. It works flawlessly and has no logo. What makes this worth nearly 3 times the price?
Works. Used it for years. Also great for making circuits and Arduino projects etc. The small pieces won't jump all over the place and won't scratch your desk.

Can someone explain to me why anyone would want their keyboard to be on the mouse pad? I don't get it.
As a former 'elite gamer' (oh man that sounds so bad), I have always used a giant mousepad like this on an "L-Shaped desk) where my keyboard is to my left and my mousepad is on the right side of the L. I've used low sensitivity so I can make fast, accurate movements to precisely shoot my enemies in the face.
