hook up is easy. The hose connected with the main washer. We have a toddler and a first grader, i use the main washer for their stuff. This sidekick is good for underwear, socks, mask, small towels, etc small stuff you dont want to mix with clothes.
The unit has a sensor on the top that looks for the weight of the compatiblen LG washers to fit snug into. If it does not detect the washer, it will give an error code. It might be bypassed by applying an object to simulate a washing machine...
You don't really want to use this as a standalone washer anyway as it does not filter when it drains. It also does not dispense detergent and fabric softener like a normal washer machine so you have to watch it.
Watch the installation video and see how it is installed. You are really better off with a portable washing machine.

Like I said, there is one in satisfactory condition in stock 80 miles away from me. The information is listed on the page above the listing for the one in poor condition and it will tell you if there is one within 250 miles of you. I'm not sure how telling thou the zipcode of one 80 miles from me helps the community since it is easily accessible on bestbuy's product page. And like I said, YMMV.
