I was actually looking into NVRs as the current one i got from lorex sucks balls and will seemingly only work with lorex cameras. i tried to put an armcrest camera into the POE and while it sees it, it wont show me any video even after establishing all the basic credentials with the armcrest camera
so help me understand your setup
you got multiple POE cameras throughout the house and then you got them all going into a POE switch and then you have that tied into the QNAP or does the POE switch just go into your normal non-poe switch and the QNAP is part of that network?
just trying to understand the architecture or if the QNAP ports are both used - one for having the Video security system on its own network via the Switch+QVR Pro and the other to tie into your lan or if you just have the security cameras on your LAN.
please let me know!

The security cameras are connected to several POE switches that are in turns connected to mesh nodes. Running all Ethernet cables to a single point doesn't make sense to me.
The QNAP for security camera and files I want to share is connected to the mesh router on that network. I have other QNAP for internal network.
In addition to the ONVIF cameras that are connected to the QNAP, I also have several Ring and Wyze cameras on that network for redundancy.
I have not setup the QNAP as bridge yet but may try that as I like to make use of the extra 2.5GbE port. I may break up the IoTs to another network by using the extra port.
To me the 253D is no more expensive than a capable NVR. I can control full PTZ and look at the recordings. My PTZs are mostly 5M with one 8M. Most of the sub $200 NVR I tried crashes or discount frequently once I connected more than 3 or 4 cameras. The 253D handles all 12 (8 for QVR Pro and 4 Surveillance Station) without problem although the Surveillance Station is not as good as the QVR Pro.

when you had only 4gb of ram in it (if you did), did it also run ok?

2M on Surveillance Station with 8GB. I didn't try on 4GB as I ordered the RAM at same time and ran 8 GB on day one. Typical RAM load is around 40-50%. Depends how they swap the RAM, 4GB may or may not be taxing for 12 cameras, but 8 should be fine.
