Seems everyone is looking for a Synology, me included. How do these compare?

Advertised feature wise, quite a bit better. Security wise, waaaaaay worse. I would not trust a qnap device to ever be internet-facing, and in fact I have the predecessor to this model, a TS-453-be, and I installed TrueNAS Scale on it because I simply don't trust qnap as far as I can throw them, security-wise. Go with the Synology, IMO. They aren't entirely without their issues, but they are nowhere near as insecure as qnap devices.

This is an excellent deal for the TS-453D but consider carefully that QNAP NAS has experienced two severe security breaches in the last year.

I bought a TS-653D (6 bay version of this NAS gen) last year after doing a lot of research. The decision came down inevitably to QNAP or Synology. Both companies are HQ'd in Taiwan and have their strengths as well as major negatives.

I chose QNAP because it offers more features and flexibility for same $$. Synology is a bit more plug 'n play (all relative) but comes with more user restrictions. What really turned me off to Synology is an overall mindset that is moving to a closed proprietary system, call it Apple'ish but without the whizbang... just looking for opportunities to overcharge a captive user base.

Both companies have done some very unfriendly things to their user base. When QNAP was breached in early 2021, they delayed several weeks before notifying their users. Synology OTOH, purposely shut down some of its users thru a firmware/OS update when it discovered that some of the lower end NAS could be used to support features that the more expensive NAS had. That's right, purposely locked the users out of their data.

Also, needs to be said that NAS is its own unique niche / universe, not just a computer with hard drives. Both QNAP and Synology are relatively equivalent from OS and application standpoint. Synology will be easier to install but you will be more restricted by how Synology wants you to use their NAS. QNAP has a steeper learning curve but is much more flexible, allowing you to more finely tune the NAS to your network/use. Pick your poison...

I got this about a year ago, it's been nice but there are some things to know
1) Make SURE if you run any VMs that you use the VirtIO drivers. Google how to get them and set them up, it's easy. Tons of latency in VMs (disk, network, cpu, everything) without these drivers.
1b) Even with these drivers, CPU is still nothing special, there's input/visible lag, so don't expect to run VMs for gaming or anything requiring real-time interaction.
2) As someone else mentioned, don't bother putting any part of it internet-facing, you're not going to be able to secure it adequately unless your router/firewall allows for whitelisting remote access IPs, and most home routers don't. The nature of these NAS's exploits are that they are zero-days and the patching is always done reactively. If you're visible you're vulnerable.
3) Thermals are really surprisingly good, I loaded it with 2x 16TB Seagate Exos & 2x 16TB WD Golds that are somewhat active most of the time, and the fan doesn't even get audible or above 30% RPMs, while temps stay around 105-110F. I don't know how that compares to others and it may not be the "best" but it's not in the range of even being a concern.
4) There's this nagging thing where it unfortunately started taking snapshots of my VMs even though I have snapshots completely disabled everywhere. I think it started with an update. Others have mentioned something similar. Eats up a ton of storage and snapshots are clunky/slow to delete. It's a relatively new issue for me so I'm still observing and trying to figure it out.

I have both synology and qnap and you really have to be extra careful with Qnap with security. A few things i did for my NAS is change the default port, disable admin user, only expose what you need. I only enable SSH when i need and close the service. Here is my experience with both.

One of a few things about QNAP that i like is the amount of USB port it has and it also have the z-wave/zigbee stick drivers still in the OS. You need to load it for startup instead of Synology. It also has a PCI slot that support the dual m.2. Qnap let you use these as primary drive so all my vm is running much faster instead of just using for just caching. I have the M.2 as raid1 and the 4 drives as raid5 for data. For Synology DS920+ you can do this too via a hack that is not supported, when one of the m.2 failed, i have not found a way of simple repair the volume since the method is not supported via UI.

my qnap 451+ had hardware incorrectly designed and failed on me after 4 years. I don't trust Qnap software or hardware. I would avoid Qnap if you want anything reliable or secure for your NAS.

I highly recommend not getting a QNAP. While my QNAP has worked great for the past 4 years, I cannot support a company that has such poor security practices. Plus, the low morality when it comes to notifying their customers of issues.

Not making excuses for QNap, however, all NAS brands incl Synology, <insert brand here>, or IOT smart plug, will have some issue at some point. Yes, QNap handled the PR and "default" settings poorly.

Convenience always is associated with risk. It's up to the end user to not turn on every shiny bell and whistle

HW-wise, I've own 251, 451, and currently on 453D. All have been bullet proof. Even successfully transferred disks between units! (Backed up to separate disk first of course). LAG setup the dual Nics. And I've never enabled QCloud (whatever it is), d or UPnP, and on all my devices (IOT and network gear) I disable default admin account.

I simply can't say this is a deal bc 453D is old for this price point. They def need a spec bump (faster transcoding) or drop price.

NAS are great products when used properly
