I bought this last spring for the same price from Costco. It is my first Surface product and I thought it would be bulletproof because it is Microsoft software on Microsoft hardware. That said, it still has its quirks that require occasional driver reinstallations. Overall, it's still a quality machine.
It might still be the same price at Costco. I just can't check because I am no longer a member.
8GB is not enough. If I have to buy a 13 inch laptop, I would search for a refurbished XPS13 from Dell outlet, For example, when they have coupon, you can get a XPS 13 7390 with 4K 16GB/512GB for less than $900.

I bought the first gen and it's a top-quality machine. The main thing preventing me from ever purchasing another one of these is that the battery is not replaceable -- even by MS.
Fortunately, USB-C cables and 20000mAh battery packs are relatively cheap.

It is quite the annoying quirk. I have a Surface Pro 4 that I absolutely love but the battery life is dwindling and there's literally no way to replace it other than essentially send it in for generic "service", which costs probably more than it's worth ($450 for a machine that's 4+ years old), which they accomplish by just doing a replacement with refurb.
MS has seemingly designed their Surface products to be replaced the way people replace cell phones, but even non-user serviceable cell phone batteries can be replaced with a paid service. This seems like that something that needs to change.
8GB is definitely no longer enough, just a fresh install and nothing running on Windows 10 takes about 5GB of RAM. I work with Surface products, they are great to use personally but in a business environment their docks suck! We are always replacing their docks, good thing we have a 3 year warranty on them... Other than that the hardware is 99% solid and I like the Book compared to the Surface Pro or Go.
This is an amazing laptop. I got Certified Refurbished in pristine condition. If you are planning to upgrade the HDD later its pain and currently its hard to find 1TB. Many people get confuse between the surface line up. I recommend you look some YouTube reviews before the purchase and also HDD upgrade videos. Good Luck

5GB? With "nothing" running? No way... You might want to troubleshoot anything that uses 5GB on a "fresh install" just by booting...
I just booted up an old laptop, it was using 1.1GB out of 16GB. My desktop uses around 1.5GB with a few background apps that start with it.
Edit: Although I will agree that you shouldn't be buying anything with 8GB of RAM. Applications are only becoming more resource hungry, as are games. Although you aren't gaming on this laptop.

Any differences between Costco & Best Buy models?
