The overwhelming complexity of our universe and the odds of our planet configured in such a way to even support life is evidence of an Intelligent Designer

evidence? No.
that's your gut feeling correlating to how you were brought up. Life being here only relates to the vastness of the universe.
The exact combination of random events spurring on life,, it was a numbers game, it was bound to happen somewhere, and it has most likely happened on A LOT of other worlds, even though that number is a minuscule portion of the total number of stars/planets.

Even if there is an Intelligent Designer, he/she/it may have designed evolution as a way for creatures to adapt.

Leading paleontologist, Niles Eldredge, has acknowledged that there is little, if any, evidence of evolutionary transitions in the fossil record

Theories are theories and stay like that until proven conclusively. A theory can be good or bad and we mostly want to believe what we want to as it suits us. The only thing science about it is its a scientific theory... Is it proven in a rigorous scientific setting, I am not sure about that! Take it easyPeace
Apart from that any other personal reviews from those who purchased how good a book it is. Tempted but want to hear first hand feedback.

He supports evolution, but favors the punctuated equilibrium theory, in which evolution happens in quick bursts rather than gradually. This explains the lack of fossils, because the animals that evolved were in small groups that broke off from the main group and these fewer numbers made them less likely to become fossilized.

No, calling it chance is reductive.
Evolution is not chance. It's a natural mechanism where whatever traits work best, continues on to the next generation.
These traits continue over time until the difference between what was, and what is, becomes something new.

Yup biggest hole in the 'theory' that there are no transitional fossil records. So much for science right.
