Something to consider is that the v8 animal refurbished is only $199 on the dyson.com, the outlet section.

what's significantly better between the V7 and V8 models? Looking to get a vacuum that will last a while for my in-laws. They keep buying the crappy cheap kind that end up lasting a minute before battery dies a month after buying. They also don't take good care of their stuff so I cringe at the thought of them absolutely destroying a Dyson

Our old V6 bit the dust so we looked at the V8 and the V10 as replacements, eventually chosing the V8. We wanted it mainly for quick touch ups and light cleaning. The V8 is a lot lighter and the battery life seems fine for what we need it for. The V10 would probably be better if you intend on using for your main vacuum.
