I have this and the RX-V6A that replaces it.

The TSR-7850 model has nicer on screen controls.
The TSR-7850 has a remove that feel more premium and heavy but is less well designed. The RX-V6A remote is better laid out but feels cheap and plasticky.
The new RX-V6A supposedly has issues with passing 4K/120Hz through it. I just send the images to the TV and use eARC to send the sound from the TV to the receiver. Problem solved.
For the TSR-7850 there are two apps you can use to control the device, each doing different things. For the RX-V6A, they tried to combine them into one and the execution is not good. (Either way the phone control of setting is a huge improvement over using the on screen controls. It is nice to make changes without interrupting what you are watching.

I don't feel that the newer version offers anything worth spending more money for.
Just a general gripe here on the industry (love Yahama sound equipment):

If you're going to go for atmos / DTS X etc., you really need the four elevated (or at least directed) channels to get good 3D imaging/vectoring of the object-based sound. People & publishers that take the time to do back-to-back room-calibrated tests with good tracks confirm this. Why we are 8 YEARS into Atmos receivers and still so many X.X.2 receivers from the industry? How much does it really cost to move to X.X.4? Just seems like such an unnecessary handicap. DTSX/Atmos provide such a significant enhancement to surround sound, to add all the technology to the receiver but forget about the two extra effect channels to make it really work is just asinine. Thank you marketing departments!

(IMO: If you want to really use atmos/DTSX, wait for a refurb deal <$400 on a 5.2.4 capable unit, instead of dropping almost as much money on a partial-implementation of a great technology!)
It's an ok deal. I bought this last year Jan for $259 from woot.

I just purchased a (NIB) Denon AVR-S540BT receiver from Best Buy a week ago. Do you think it would be worth returning that for this refurbed receiver? They are pretty close in price, the Denon was $299 + tax. Has anybody dealt with a refurb from Yamaha/Newegg? Experience?

Yeah, it's amazing how cheap nice older receivers go for on Craigslist. I just snagged a few nice midgrade Yamaha and Onkyo models for peanuts.
I work by a Goodwill store and could buy one every week that would work just great. There are two things that the slightly older ones tend to lack:
1) Direct to Wifi Music. (Spotify, etc.) The older ones will have Bluetooth but that required you to be in proximity to the receiver and is more prone to dropping. I had no idea about this before I bought one and it is my favorite feature.
2) A good web app for managing settings. These are so much easier to use than the on screen controls and you can use them without interrupting the programing.

Also, at my Goodwill there is never a matching remote. The remote resellers scoop them up too quickly for me.

I need a cheaper receiver with 2 zone and Airplay support. I will use it with my computers (modern+vintage) and zone 2 will be connected to my deck speakers. I already have Yamaha 3070 for my HT (7.2.4) and a Yamaha soundbar with Miracast, so Miracast on this one would be nice to have and I can manage all devices using same app. Is this what I should get?

For what you're intending, this one sounds like a great fit.

I purchased this same unit from Woot for $270 almost 9 months ago, and I love it:

ORDER DETAILS
Order Date: Thursday, July 16, 2020
Order Number: #66013144
Estimated delivery date: Thursday, July 30, 2020
Yamaha TSR-7850R 7.2-Channel Network AV Receiver
$269.99 $489.95 45% off list price
Sold by Woot LLC
Condition: Factory Reconditioned

It replaced a Marantz slimline receiver. I've had a bunch of receivers (and some separates) over the years, including Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, Panasonic, and more. The Marantz was my favorite of the receivers for sound quality (can't beat the extra headroom from beastly separates though)... at least until I got this Yamaha. It sounds excellent in my setup, an all Axiom Audio Epic 80 7.1 system. At least through moderate sound levels, it sounds fantastic and was an excellent buy for us. If this is the going price and you're in the market right now, I definitely recommend this Yamaha.

I have this model and like it a lot. The app is excellent for our use and setup was a breeeze and very accurate compared to the denons auto audio setup. I do miss the deeper denon sound. Our 7 channel stereo setting on this model just quit working correctly also. The whole system with setting works flawlessly until we run 7 channel stereo, then our front speakers get all quiet and the rears get very loud unless we put it in party mode and then everything get corrected

In response to those people lamenting the lack of full pre-outs and .4 Atmos... the industry knows its customers. People who have under $500 to spend on an AV are generally not the same people looking for full pre-outs and .4 Atmos. I sure am not and I'm glad I have the option of a good (but maybe not great) 7.2 system for $300.

I'm with you on this. I would not upgrade to a 2020 model and I would only buy older models if they were cheap, which this is not. If I didn't have an AV I might consider this, but I'd try to pick up a good used one locally first. If there is one thing that people are always selling in vast quantities it's AVs. They are the electronic equivalent of exercise machines.

What models do you recommend we look at as used local resale on on LetYAGO or CL that are a good blend.. Looking to upgrade a 14 YO unit to something that works with my new TV input/outputs changes that have ceased me having any AVR to my TV? Not an expert on AV so anyone suggestions would be greatly appreaciated! thanks!Applause

I got this at Woot last year for $260 refurb. It's a solid unit. The only issue I've noted is that Bluetooth output is unreliable, which was a pain the one time that I wanted to use it like that. Other than that it has lots of bells and whistles and good sound.

Supports Tidal for some reason.

I'm planning on adding a theater to my basement next year. 4 ceiling speakers is on my must-have list. But thoughts on 7.2.4 vs 5.2.4? I see some say 7 is overkill and unnecessary, plus it would require an extra amp for the two channels--and a receiver to accomodate--since an 11 channel avr is likely out of my budget.
It comes down to the size of your layout and quality of your speakers whether it's worth going with 7.2.4.
From someone who has setup many setups I would strongly suggest looking over Dolby's recommendations, the more you follow those layouts & placements the better the performance.
Speakers play thee biggest role on the quality of what you hear, the better(quality) the speakers the better performance.

IMO EVERY speaker matters, especially with object based setups.

I would suggest whatever your budget, spend the majority of it on your speakers.

A key issue here the definition of "quality" and the "worth" of it, it's different for every one of us.
The majority of people in here are more "budget" minded so just keep that in mind.

I would suggest going after the speakers you listened for yourself and are at the very top of your performance/budget ratio. You may not be able to buy all at once so just get them little by little.
IMO you should have a good 5.1 before moving up to object based soundtracks anyways.

The great thing for you is time is on your side so you can start saving a budget and look for the speakers that sound great to you.

I've had a refurb of this receiver model for about 18 months and I really like it. I configured the extra two channels as "height" speakers and placed them wide and 8 feet high on the wall the TV is on, pointing down at about a 30 degree angle.

Sure, not "true" Atmos, but you can definitely hear things that are supposed to be "above" from those speakers on Amtos tracks, and it really fills out the wall with sound on regular surround tracks. You can send a bit of the center channel to the height speakers so spoken dialog sounds more "centered" vertically instead of just coming out of my center channel, which is unfortunately about 18 inches below the bottom of the TV.

I got my TSR-7850 on OfferUp. Best thing to do is decide on the features you want and try to match them to what's available. It may take a few weeks to find something that works for you at the price you want to pay, but searching is part of the fun, at least for me.
