The sound is terrific. However there is a limited per micro SD card of 128gb. In addition, the music needs to be imported into the device. You can not simply insert an SD card and listen.
Buttons rock. You don't have to look at the thing to track fwd, volume down, etc. I know... silly. I'm such a boomer.
If you're taking the trouble to play your own music files supposedly on a hi-fi device... why the hell would you care if there's bluetooth on it? Some of these posts make no sense and clearly aren't the audience for this device.

Bought one of these today. Looking to use with my Sony 1000Xm4 headphones and try to get into a little hi res music. Would like to see if any better then using Tidal on the iPhone.
Honestly there's no point of you're just transferring over bluetooth. You're losing any quality gains as soon as you do that. If you're serious about this, you should be using a proper wired set

Will I benefit if using the xm4's wired to the Sony Walkman?

This has a pretty good Sony DAC inside.

Unless I see actual technical specs on the DAC, I'm going to stick with my LG Phone. One of the many reviews of the LG V40 absolutely raves about the ESS SABRE DAC:

And yes, if you're using any kind of wireless headphones, there is no need to get a DAP at all - your phone will do just fine.

It appears that Sony keep its information about It's proprietary DAC very private. That's the Sony way. yummy

Woot recently had the V30 (unlocked) for $200. I balked, and may wait to see if the V40 eventually comes down to a similar price.

From what I've read, Sony hasn't released info on the DAC in this unit.

ALL the talk, into, detailed reviews, comparisons are here at the world's biggest headphone forum.

...

At this price level, obviously it won't crush an A&K at $1000.

But as you can read, Sony already has ultra top end portables.

The going price for a similar product is $15-$50. I don't think it's a deal to pay 3x to 10x more for a Sony badge on the front.
I spent more than that on cheap players and ended up buying this one anyway.
Therefore, in fact, I created this topic here when I saw the price and bought it in order to communicate the price to other people.
Yes, this is a niche product and if you are happy with music from your phone, it is not for you. I'm talking not only about the sound quality, but also about the operating time, supported formats, and compactness.
People who need it go and buy this player. People who don't need it really just won't understand why. This is normal.

I'm gathering you can't just open a Windows folder and transfer contents of the device?
Yes, you can just transfer content. It's easy. And you can then select a folder on your player and start music. But if you need to make playlists, you need software.

So basically if your phone had SD card support then you wouldn't need this. Maybe the quality of the audio is better here but I'd be surprised if most people could easily discern the difference.
LG v20 and v30 phenom DAC in their phones.

Different people have different preferences/priorities/needs. What you said is similar to saying a Ford Focus or Festiva (or similar basic car) and a Land Rover/Porsche/Mercedes are similar products and wonder why anyone would spend so much more for the latter. For a majority of people, the differences may not be worth paying for, but for some it may be worth paying for.
