If you scroll down the description where the other models are listed you can see the 700 series, clip the coupon on that and it is only $45. The 700 and up models all have adjustable flow control valves if you are worried about turbulence.

FLUVAL 07 series is MUCH BETTER but..

This canister filter was the first one I was going to go for due to price. I thought of whats happening with the filtration and thought it was absurd looking at some of these other canister filters. I then decided to do a lot of research including top YouTube channels but also popular forums and everyone seems to REALLY love the Fluval 07 series a lot.

I gave it a look just for the hell of it and started noticing major features I didnt think about

Is the motor completely silent or is it a loud noise?
How easy is it to get the trays out?
Does it have flow adjustment?
How big are to tubes going in and out of the aquarium?
What free media comes with it and is it any good?
How many layers does it have?
Whats the warranty period and is it any good?
Whats the actual size of the cannister filter itself?
What does the intake and outtake ends look like and whats their functionality?

After I started to actually give it thought I was like I see why everyone invest so much in the Fluval filters. I would have made a major mistake if I went with the one here. The lack of features, the bulkiness of it, not just the canister filter body itself but the actual pipes and what goes into the aquarium that people will actually see, this is very important to me. Not to mention we're comparing a cheap Chinese motor you can actually hear clearly verse a SILENT Italian filter so even if you dont tuck it inside a cabinet, it's still silent and it's aesthetically pleasing so if someone saw it, it doesn't look cheap and horrible. The actual price for the Fluval if all those features I bulletined above are important - it's a no brainer and with PETCO you can get a significant amount off (up to $50 off). You're also getting top notch filters with excellent media included in their price.

Why I would get this filter:

If noise wasn't important to me
If aesthetics weren't important with what goes in the tank, tubing, and canister itself
Easy flow control built in that actually worked
Ease of cleaning the media stacks/filtration wasn't a big deal
If I were on a really tight budget
A fish room where I had many large tanks (even here, some will simply DIY their own filtration)

I think this has its market for sure but if you are willing to spend a bit more and its your show tank, seriously look at Fluval and also look at Fluval 3.0 light, it's highly recommended from top YouTubers but also across the community in general. I've found Fluval to be impressive, up there with Seachem (excellent hang on back filter but also one of the priciest options for HOB).

Great post. I never thought to use the cheap nylon pot scrubbers as media. Pretty clever.

Thanks! They're obviously not going to be as good as real ceramic media like biomax. But they'll be at least as good as most sponges. And this filter has 3 big media baskets. They only include a sponge or two and a floss pad or two for media. So, there's lots of room left. if you filled them mostly with biomax, that could get pricey! But use the included sponge, a bag of biomax and some pot scrubbers, and your tank's nitrogen cycle should be super charged!

I have been waiting for the 1200 model to go on sale. The last sale was over a year ago. May have to bite the bullet and get this 1000 model to run along with my 1200.

I had an earlier model and this is great. I used polyfill for the filter with mesh bags of charcoal. So cheap to change. If I still had my aquarium I will pull the trigger on this.

I have a 20 gallon freshwater, heavily planted, with a couple of hanging filters on the back ( 2x Aqueon QuietFlow Aquarium Power Filter, Size 10.) I'm looking for something that will be less disruptive for the creatures and maybe less maintenance too.

Is this overkill? On lowest settings would it provide an advantage over the current units?

Definitely overkill for a 20 gallon and much more turbulent than small hang on back filters.

I have 3 of these. 1x1000 and 2x1200. Currently assisting in over-filtering my 55g sump on my 135g aquarium.

They aren't quiet but they aren't horribly noisy either. I replaced the filtering with generic bioballs/ceramic filters, but kept a single floss on top and coarse floss on bottom.

Great deal. I purchased the 20.5" last time for my 110 gallon FW, and was waiting on a deal for another canister to supplement. At this price , hard to beat. Great tips as well. Repped for a solid solid post

This would work great on a smaller tank, with Penn Plax they tend to overestimate the tank size. I would say this is really a 50 gallon filter.

Any canister would be an improvement as it would keep more CO2 in your water than the hang on back style filters.

clean your sponges in "tank water"...

Thank you. Pick up the 700.
I have a 20gal tall tank with some green algae hair growing on it.
Could anyone show me how I could add a diy co2 to this filter? I'm new to diy co2 and this type of filter.
Thank you very much

Besides the size, the 1000 comes with 3 media filter baskets while the 700 only allows for 2. For a few bucks more I'd go for the 1000 over the 700, and you can adjust the flow so it's not too high for your tank.
