Penn-Plax Aquarium Cascade 1000 Canister Filter for aquariums up to 100 gallons $49.35 at Amazon after the $15.59 coupon on the product page.
This is quite a good price for a decent canister filter and would be a great upgrade for anyone with a hang-on-back filter.
Some canister filter tips from the experts:
- For additional filtration power, fill the media baskets with good biological media like biomax, bio rings or sponges. (or for a cheap DIY alternative, try those cheap nylon pot scrubbers you can find at the dollar stores!) Activated carbon is an alternative for chemical filtration, though some hobbyists debate it's efficacy. Save money by buying it loose and bagging it yourself.
- Also, add a prefilter sponge for extra filtration and to keep small debris out of your filter, allowing you to clean the media inside less often. It also can keep smaller fish, shrimp and babies from being sucked in to the filter!
- You might want to put some floss or a pad on the sides of the baskets, since some water can make its way around the baskets and avoid being filtered. Floss will block that easy flow and add filtration.
- ignore the manufacturer's advice to change your sponge pads often. They only say that to keep making money off of you, and you're just throwing away all that beneficial bacteria you built up! If you clean the sponges in tap water, they should last for years, if not decades. You'll probably want to clean and change the floss pads though.
- Also, NEVER clean your media in tap water, because the chlorine and chloramine in tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria that does most of the filtration. Rinse the media with tank water.
- Always take filter manufacturers' aquarium size recommendations with a grain of salt. Those numbers are based on absolutely idea conditions which won't exist in your tank. Always get a filter for a bigger tank than you have. There's no such thing as too much filtration in an aquarium.
- Google "pimp my filter" or search on YouTube for good ideas.

This canister filter was the first one I was going to go for due to price. I thought of whats happening with the filtration and thought it was absurd looking at some of these other canister filters. I then decided to do a lot of research including top YouTube channels but also popular forums and everyone seems to REALLY love the Fluval 07 series a lot.
I gave it a look just for the hell of it and started noticing major features I didnt think about
Is the motor completely silent or is it a loud noise?
How easy is it to get the trays out?
Does it have flow adjustment?
How big are to tubes going in and out of the aquarium?
What free media comes with it and is it any good?
How many layers does it have?
Whats the warranty period and is it any good?
Whats the actual size of the cannister filter itself?
What does the intake and outtake ends look like and whats their functionality?
After I started to actually give it thought I was like I see why everyone invest so much in the Fluval filters. I would have made a major mistake if I went with the one here. The lack of features, the bulkiness of it, not just the canister filter body itself but the actual pipes and what goes into the aquarium that people will actually see, this is very important to me. Not to mention we're comparing a cheap Chinese motor you can actually hear clearly verse a SILENT Italian filter so even if you dont tuck it inside a cabinet, it's still silent and it's aesthetically pleasing so if someone saw it, it doesn't look cheap and horrible. The actual price for the Fluval if all those features I bulletined above are important - it's a no brainer and with PETCO you can get a significant amount off (up to $50 off). You're also getting top notch filters with excellent media included in their price.
Why I would get this filter:
If noise wasn't important to me
If aesthetics weren't important with what goes in the tank, tubing, and canister itself
Easy flow control built in that actually worked
Ease of cleaning the media stacks/filtration wasn't a big deal
If I were on a really tight budget
A fish room where I had many large tanks (even here, some will simply DIY their own filtration)
I think this has its market for sure but if you are willing to spend a bit more and its your show tank, seriously look at Fluval and also look at Fluval 3.0 light, it's highly recommended from top YouTubers but also across the community in general. I've found Fluval to be impressive, up there with Seachem (excellent hang on back filter but also one of the priciest options for HOB).

They aren't quiet but they aren't horribly noisy either. I replaced the filtering with generic bioballs/ceramic filters, but kept a single floss on top and coarse floss on bottom.

This would work great on a smaller tank, with Penn Plax they tend to overestimate the tank size. I would say this is really a 50 gallon filter.
Any canister would be an improvement as it would keep more CO2 in your water than the hang on back style filters.
Paid $70 nov 2018 for this and it has been great. May pick another up for backup.
