Is it really on clearance?
Not sure what their definition of clearance is, but msrp is $70 and the cheapest I've seen anywhere is $55.
You can find some of the smaller (but still fun) on sale for around 16-20. At the end of the day, licensed Legos are never cheap. 😬

Blame Nintendo for high licensing fees, even though these sets amount to free advertising for their games.
Any particular one you recommend?
My toddler loves building and rebuilding all of these over and over. But of the cheaper sets I think the "Pokey" one is pretty clever. You spin a hammer (which has a music feature) and knock pieces out one at a time. The "Womp" set is also fun.
The Yoshi set is the one I was most disappointed in. He's too small for Mario to ride, the hammock is too flat and doesn't swing well and the house is too small for Mario to even enter.
That's actually exactly how I found these, my son's birthday is coming up and he's been asking for Bowser's Castle for months. Sounds like your little guy is gonna have a great birthday!
