I cant recommend these Brother Laser Printers enough! I have had mine (HL-2280DW) for eight years now and it still runs like a champ.

3rd party toner costs next to nothing and have never had a single issue with it. I swear it is going to outlive me at this rate.

Yeah this is only wired. It's the DW that's WiFi.

I got a couple of these new for $50 or $60 at Best Buy back in summer 2017. They work like champs & still going strong with no issues whatsoever.

From everything I can find, this model appears to be wired only. Are you sure that this works with 2.4 GHz?

OT, just recently my Brother HL-2280DW lags when I want to print. It will just automically start printing hours later. Any suggestions? TIA
Hi, the printer may be in sleep mode. If you are not using it for certain period of time.. Printer goes to sleep mode to reduce power consumption.

Try, pressing go/any key on printer to bring it out of sleep mode and then submit Print.

In a laser printer, the fuser is the first thing that shuts down when idle because it's a heater element that sucks power. That's why it has to warm up when you do a print.

BTW I know a well known engineer who can't be in the same room with a laser printer because the ozone smell that's emitted makes him ill and ends up in the ER. So it's probably good that they go into sleep mode.

The new scam is to build printers with separate drum and ink toner - it appears that this unit is of that type. The toner is relatively cheap, but you will need to buy a new drum after about 5 toner cartridges (according to Amazon Q/A).

A new drum is $90. Brother-Genuine-DR630
New scam? As far as I know all laser printers have always had separate drums and toner cartridges.

Just another vote for this being an amazing printer. We've been using this one or a similar one, wired, no network, etc, for 2-3 years now and love it. I do wish we had a network version, but it's hard to get rid of a printer that's worked so well.

Yeah Samsung and other companies started with the toner+drum in one cartridge on the lower end models. Makes the replacements expensive. That's more of a scam!

I've got a 2330DW that I bought new almost 4 years ago for 119.49. It's seen a lot of use and continues to work great. Toner is cheap. I've tried a couple different brands of toner and it all seems to just work.

I got the comparable L2300D back in 2015 and it's still going strong. It's nothing fancy and aside from yearly tax returns I usually only print a few documents every couple months, but I haven't even had to replace the toner cartridge yet.

Try this for a basic CUPs setup:
https://www.howtogeek.com/169679/...-computer/

I believe I used the Brother HL-2140 Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e driver and that seems to work well. If you want Airprint support there are a few extra steps, and you can google "cups raspberry pi airprint" to find out how to add and configure the needed packages.
I've got mine setup using CUPS and Pi4. The CUPS driver doesn't want to print any pdf that needs to be scaled to print, like Fit To Page, etc.. only likes Actual Size which is a real PIA. If you can pick up a wireless printer for $50-$60 more, I would go that route. I bought this new pre-covid for $50.

the part that usually breaks on these brother printers is a small plastic arm about 1" with a nub on the end of it. when you push in the paper drawer it caused the paper pull up roller to engage and grab a sheet of paper. rouch opening and closing of the paper drawer will cause this part to break. the part is about $1-2 on ebay. though note that when replacing the plastic arm with nub, it is very easy to break off the nub on the end of the small plastic arm. so, do yourself a favor and buy 2 or 3

I have a Dell E515DW all-in-one with the works including FAX and document feeder that I paid $70 for brand new 2-3 years ago. It's made by Brother. Great printer. The only reason I've been looking is because I stupidly bricked it trying to do a firmware upgrade over the wireless connection that failed. Otherwise was fabulous.

The odd thing is that it used to print fine, whether in sleep/deep sleep mode, and if it didn't, I would just press "Go" key. Not anymore. Just has a mind of it's own know. Maybe it's breaking, hope not, this has been my favorite printer I've had ever. Thanks for replying,
