For $20 more you can replace the ear pads with these deeper and much much softer and more comfortable velvet pads.
Takes like 10 mins to rip off old pads and install these. Highly recommend doing.

Cheapest it's been in over a year according to Camelcamelcamel.

Probably one of the best open back headphones you can get under $100. I've owned these for 6+ years and they're holding up like champs.

Cheapest it's been in over a year according to Camelcamelcamel. $8 cheaper than buying from drop.

I got these for my son and they've got a couple issues -- one, the cord is borked. There's some weird squeaking/cross-talking. It goes away when I use a $2 monoprice cable, but since I ordered them at regular price I think they'll go back at least for a pair with a good cable.

Second issue is that I got these because he's into music and gaming, however I didn't realize how much sound leakage these would suffer. He's usage is gaming and music, but a big portion of the music is going to be in his dorm room and library while studying -- I think they're just too loud for that.

So, we're gonna look at closed-back headphones. I know he'll give up a little bit of gaming detail, but gain some silence at the same time. Anyone have any recs for closed back headphones say, under $100? Or should I get him the Monoprice retros for library use and grab another pair of these when they go back on sale.
audio technica ath-m40x is probably the best closed back headphone under $100 in terms of build and sound quality.

but as you expected, they are not great for imaging/soundstage so you will give a bit for FPS gaming. they do clamp a bit harder and seal a bit tighter so IMO they wont wear as comfortable as the SHP-9500s but hardly anything will.

personally i dont think open back are too loud for dorm but i'd just rock Bluetooth and more transportable like airpods/earbuds for library.

Thanks. He's got bt buds, so that's an option. I feel like I remember the M50s being under $100 back in the day so paying that for the 40s kinda sucks. LMAO

i have owned the m50s for over 10+ years now. they are good but they aren't the most comfortable thing for longer listening (warm ears and kind of fatiguing). and since using for gaming they dont get much play anymore since i grabbed a set of sennheiser 58x jubilees.

my favorite audio reviewer zeos likes the m40, he does not like the m50. take that with a grain of salt i guess. i dont have the m40 to compare but i typically find his reviews to be accurate (atleast with the small sample i've be able to listen to).
