I signed up for a 2 free lines last year. Here are a few of the gotchas that I had that I wanted to call out:

1. There is no free lunch - you still have to pay any taxes and fees imposed by your state. My "free" lines each come out to about $5 a month. TMobile doesn't explicitly charge for these lines otherwise as far as I can tell.

2. If you add the line manually through the web portal, you may be opted in to data on the line. In my case, I'm grandfathered in on a Simple Choice plan that has no free data tier currently available.
I got opted in (with NO prompt / confirmation) to a $15 / month data plan that I also could not manually change. I had to call TMobile support to alter it. That charge also showed up on my bill as a pro rated amount for the time between adding the line and before getting support to fix it. (I was able to get partially reimbursed by 1 CS rep)
In my case, I was able to get my free lines set to a 2.5 gb / month free data plan. That was the original default for my plan, but my other lines all were upgraded to 4 gb / month as part of an older promotion. Since that promotion is no longer available, 2.5 gb was all they could offer. That part is free though.

TL;DR - your monthly bill WILL increase. Expect to get help from TMobile support.

Agreed. Those will older / legacy SOCs run into issues, and increase in monthly costs depending on what their plan offers. Magenta has taxes included, so free lines do not have any taxes or other fees.

Even with Magenta we ran into issues last year when we signed up for Hookup where they messed up the trade in discounts for two of the four lines. So, one should consider themselves very lucky if all goes well. There is something or the other bound to go wrong, but eventually gets sorted out.

This is generally true for older plans that don't include taxes. Tax-included plans like ONE and magenta the lines are completely free.

I feel like this should be 2 separate threads. The free line and another thread for 20% hookup.
I should have. Saw both up on Reddit and created one thread in a rush.

Tried this the other time when T-Mobile had this deal. We called them to confirm that there would be no extra charges (besides the taxes/fees that you get per line) and lo and behold, the following months we get charged for an additional line even though it's supposed to be free. I haven't had a good experience with this though I'm in a grandfathered plan (simple choice) so maybe that's part of it but it definitely did say we were eligible.

can I use this SIM on ipad once it is activated on phone? or TMO will disable it after while.
YES, you can use this sim in your iPad. I pay for 2 lines and have 3 free lines on promotion (5 lines total)
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

So if I have 4 lines on my eligible plan, if I add free lines now, pay the taxes and stuff for 1 year then can I cancel the paid lines and move the existing 'paid' numbers over to the free lines, therefore only having to pay for 2/4 lines on the account?

This is highly unusual. Customers should not count on this working regularly.

You wouldn't be able to move the numbers.

Currently at 8 lines with Magenta, two from the T-Mobile Costco $300 GC per line deal. Can I get a 9th line for free? I heard max for a family plan is 10 or 12 lines, so just wanted to check.

One more question: Am I able to change my paid line from the Costco deal to a watch line to keep that bogo line?
