TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

So, I went to a store, opened a new line, traded-in an Iphone XR, and ported a number from freedompop. The port-in took a while. Meanwhile they assigned a temporary number, completed the trade-in process and initiated the port-in.
Initially, the 2021 Apple trade P1 - T510 applied to my account.
The port-in took a few hours as they had to manually call in for transfer at freedompop.
I just received a message that 2021 Apple Switch trade P1 - T439 had been applied to my account.
When I checked my account just now, both the line promo and the correct phone promos were applied.
did they know about this promo? is there anything special i have to say or can i just say, id like to add a new line for free and use the iphone 12 on us promo?

Actually, he said to me, "I see you still have Sprint SIM cards. Would you like me to send you a T-Mobile SIM".....I of course asked for 4. 2 existing and 2 free lines I have sitting there. lol. probably port my mothers phone over. My 40 year old sister passed from Covid. so i have to help her. She was on my sisters account
