For anyone looking to buy a iPhone 8 for the trade-in requirement for Tmobile's iPhone 12, the following are the different sources ranked from best to worst. Keep in mind the phone carrier doesn't matter for the trade-in, so it can be unlocked, AT&T, Verizon, T-mobile, anything. Phone must not have water damage, cracked screen, anything that could be perceived as a cracked screen, password lock, or icloud lock. Small dents, scratches, screen burn, and weak batteries are okay.
Trademore - iPhone 8 starting at $159 [trademore.com] Folks in the Cricket iPhone SE thread been trading their iPhone SE's for $200 Paypal from Trademore, so we know they are legit. They are also the trade-in inspector one of the cell carriers (Verizon or AT&T), so doubt they will sell anything that doesn't pass inspection. They will probably be your safest bet to acquire a good quality trade-in. Shipping is included in the price. Swappa - iPhone 8 starting at $158 [swappa.com] Swappa's policy is no junk, so you are covered if you receive something you can't trade in. That said, since everyone is a third party, you get a wide variety of prices and conditions. I have received cracked screens before, but the seller took it back immediately. Still, this may cause you to lose this Tmobile promotion. Shipping is included in the price. Local (Craigslist, Offerup, etc) Your experience will vary, and the onus is on you to validate the phone is ready for trade-in. You might score with a great deal, or you might get ripped off. Only go this route if you know how to inspect phones or you need the phone the same day. eBay [ebay.com] You will have to read each listing very carefully, since there are listings for cracked, water damaged, icloud locked, or otherwise untradeable phones. Returns policies also vary by seller. Unless you score an amazing deal on ebay, Trademore or Swappa are safer options. |

TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

No matter where you initiated the free line, you could still do the $800 in bill credits on that new free line if you buy 2 phones. or do the trade in on single line (doesn't have to be the new line). But sounds like your best bet right now is grab a BOGO without trade (whether Costco if eligible or through TMO) and sell your phones on FB etc. I did this and got $475 net on my S20FE last weekend.
Also, Costco does not run or own the kiosk at the Warehouses. It leases the space to Wireless Advocates.

I also got the 'add a free line' (4th line) a few days later with another line ported in from ATT. I popped that SIM card in a iPhone 7 that was all paid off previously. I was planning on using the 4th line for the T536 'Free iPhone SE on us' deal - which started on the 17th, and not eligible for the first 3 lines I started. Just to recap, all 4 lines were ports from a long term ATT account.
I realized that wanted to utilize the T439 $830 trade in offer on Line 1 ($75 paid off) and Line 2 ($125 paid off); (and get the keep and switch rebate for the $350). I had an iPhone 8 in hand with clean IMEI, and another iPhone 8 I had ordered off Swappa and waiting for delivery (A whole other issue, as I did not receive the imei upon payment / order receipt as other claimed to). I was willing to accept the fact that they may not allow for the T439 trade in w/o imei available at the time of order, but figured I'd try.
The plan was to call customer service, get the iPhone 12 T439 for Line 1 (activated 3/16), attempt to get the iPhone 12 T439 for Line 2 (activated 3/16; w the issue being not having the trade-in imei), and get the T536 iPhone SE on us deal for Line 4. From this thread I understood both deals were expiring.
After finally getting through to CS on the phone last night I started w Line 1. Mentioned the T439 deal by name. Had some issues w CS saying it was not a new line, but after some re-explaining and her double checking that the line was created during the promo period, we were okay to proceed. I provided the trade-in info (imei), ordered the 256gb model iphone12, paid the extra $50 upfront, got some docs sent to me for esign - and everything looked good.
For Line 2, I tried doing the same - however was stopped early because she said I absolutely needed the trade-in imei to proceed - which I did not have from my Swappa order of the iphone8. (Oh well, I'll just to the switch and save rebate for the $125 I thought).
Onto line 4. Asked for the T536 iPhone SE on us offer. It was at this time the CS rep brought up that Lines 1-3 did not appear to be 'ported-in' and only Line 4 was eligible, and that if I wanted the offer for line 1 I would need to use it on line 4 instead. I explained how I ported the first 3 lines from att at tmobile Costco kiosk on 3/16 and it should be visible in the system. She kept explaining that there was no such indication of porting from att in her 'memos', and advised that I would need to go back into the store i ported from so they could 'mark' it on my account or call 611 directly. She said she would mark on my account regarding not being able to see the porting info for lines 1-3, and that 'rest assured' I would be able to participate in these promotions if I squared away the porting details at the store for lines 1-3, even as the offers were expiring - but I would be okay because of her notes - and they would have to manually adjust.
I don't know if I'm here for advice or just to vent, but if anyone has a suggestion I'll take it. The real kick in the nuts right now is that I just looked at the docs I received from the iPhone 12 deal order (which all went thru before the mentioned anything about the issues w the ports) and at the very bottom of the email it says: "Once your new iPhone 12 - Black - 128GB ships, you'll have 30 days to send back your current Apple iPhone 8 64GB Grey - Generic in good condition to receive a oneātime bill credit of $82.00." I don't know why it's not $850 on there, just another issue to address. I'm going to swing by Costco kiosk today to see if they can rectify the port-in details / call tmobile and go from there... what a headache - but I'll take some responsibility for waiting to the last days of promotion.

Costco doesn't use the IMEI to validate. They need a place filler in their own system to complete the order on BYOD transactions. Most Costco reps will ask for an IMEI to be presented because of this. If you get a really good Kiosk rep, he will know how to put in a dummy IMEI. . .meaning they don't use it for anything further.
There are reports that NB phone numbers aren't eligible for the device promos but can be ported.
Anyone ported with a NB and already see the device promo credits?
I have old iPhone-6, iPhone-7 and iPhone-8 for trading in but I am still sending iPhone-6 for only $380 credit because I know this is my last chance to get rid of iPhone-6, nobody else wants iPhone-6.(especially for close to that price). ;-)

Unfortunately I have not actually come across anyone here or on Reddit that actually knows with 100% certainty the actual facts regarding this topic. I mostly see people posting opinion and theory as fact.
