I fish, but I'm not a serious fisherman. I hike but I'm not a serious backpacker. And I tinker around the house but I'm not a serious woodworker or mechanic.

So when I see deals for products for them I don't fully understand, I keep my mouth shut.

If you do long rides, your phone isn't going to last, simple as that.

I used to think that the radar was a stupid idea, since it's easy to ride with a helmet mirror.

But after picking up an older Varia RTL500 for $100, I changed my tune. It's amazing how nice it is to see how many vehicles are coming up behind you and how fast they're approaching before you even hear the vehicle (and you can program your Edge bike computer to beep a warning too). Just ordered the vertical 315 non-light model to stop swapping models between different bikes.

Do you even ride brah?

You'd probably get torched and be on the side of the road gasping for air.

May I ask, without being attacked, what this does that my smartphone + smart watch can't besides the radar feature? I heard battery life, which has never been even close to an issue for me on any of my 30+ mile rides (I know that's not much compared to serious riders but I really feel I could safely triple that distance if I ever felt like it ((I won't)) and still have battery left).

Phone vs bike CPU

+: battery life saver for phone, cadence sync, power sync, elevation, speed, gps accuracy

-: $$, extra weight, extra device

It's really your preference. No one actually needs one, they just want one to flex with data to prove it.

I used to use my phone when I started riding as well. The advantages of the Edge are: It does not overheat even under very hot conditions, I'm in Texas and recall having my phone shutting off on me due to the heat. It has much better contrast to see the screen in very sunny days, the watch, even in full brightness would be unreadable. Battery life is much better than a cell phone for longer rides. I find the gps to be more accurate. Garmin software is pretty good to provide training insights. Garmin connects to my power meter and any ant+ accessories. Those are some of the things I can think of on the bike computer. As for the Varia, that was one of the best purchases I've ever made for my bike, the radar is very accurate, it shows how many cars are behind you and how fast they are moving (red/orange dots), the light also changes according to light conditions and cars approaching. I still look back when change lanes, but the dots of the Varia, displayed on my Edge give me a good idea on what is behind.

My phone has GPS. And it's as accurate as the US government will legally allow. This product does not get around that
You clearly don't ride much, or far for that matter. Running gps, your phone will die. I wear a garmin fenix 5 daily, run a garmin 1000 on my race bike. And I have a 520 that use on my other more casual bikes. also I'm 29 years of age.. they make really good fitness trackers, that's what's keeping them in business
