I fish, but I'm not a serious fisherman. I hike but I'm not a serious backpacker. And I tinker around the house but I'm not a serious woodworker or mechanic.

So when I see deals for products for them I don't fully understand, I keep my mouth shut.

If you do long rides, your phone isn't going to last, simple as that.

In addition to the solid advantages already stated, i don't want my $1200 glass encased phone sitting on my handlebars when I'm the woods.

I run, bike and swim with my garmin watch. Ever try doing swim laps with a phone?

Do you even ride brah?

You'd probably get torched and be on the side of the road gasping for air.

LOL...definitely not a cyclist. A Garmin or Wahoo is the way!

Until now, I have simply used my Apple Watch and iPhone. I am considering stepping up to a device like this. In the past, I have also used old school Cat eye cycle computers. Will this sync with my existing Garmin cadence and speed sensors? I use a Wahoo Kickr Snap inside as well and wondering how this would work with that. Lastly, will this share data with Apple Health seamlessly? I like to track walks, runs, cycle, weight lifting etc. all in one place.
Thanks!
Pat

You clearly don't ride much, or far for that matter. Running gps, your phone will die. I wear a garmin fenix 5 daily, run a garmin 1000 on my race bike. And I have a 520 that use on my other more casual bikes. also I'm 29 years of age.. they make really good fitness trackers, that's what's keeping them in business
I usually carry a small power bank when using my phone for longer (>20m) rides, and a vivoactive 3 for tracking. the phone generally lasts with the power bank, if I need it. How is this if you don't need a gps (used to the route)? The V3 is good but runs lower on battery after a few hours of active tracking.

This will sync with all your existing sensors as well as your Kickr. I can't speak to Apple Health, since I don't use it. It will upload workout data to your cloud platform of choice and has very broad support by nearly all training trackers.

May I ask, without being attacked, what this does that my smartphone + smart watch can't besides the radar feature? I heard battery life, which has never been even close to an issue for me on any of my 30+ mile rides (I know that's not much compared to serious riders but I really feel I could safely triple that distance if I ever felt like it ((I won't)) and still have battery left).
Besides the aformentioned battery life, the reason I finally switched to a bike specific computer was that the chatter from the pavement caused the lense in my smartphone to go out of kilter, pretty much ruining all my pictures until I replaced it. Since my phone cost $800 and the computer only cost $200, I made the switch. A riding buddy had his phone crack when he took a spill with it mounted to the handlebars. At sub $200, it's a very easy decision for me.

Also, the rear radar is definitely one of my favorite bike gadgets, and I sing it's praises to everyone I ride with.

What's that app? I would like to try pls
Though it pails in comparison to a real bike computer and lacks many of the options that Garmin offers, I use Strava [strava.com] on my Android phone.

It works all right for what it does, though about 10% of rides have GPS glitches that throw off the track, miles, and elevation. I find it nice to compare to my previous efforts on that route and/or to see how fast other users ride the same routes.

Not to reiterate what other people have said too much, but if you're not noticing any limitations by using your phone, keep using your phone. I started looking for a bike computer when I started riding long enough to need an external battery for my phone. One of the compromises a phone app makes is checking with the GPS fewer times per second to save battery, which makes it less accurate (you can adjust this on some apps). The computer doesn't have that limitation. I also experienced overheating and an unreadable screen on my phone.

Now that I've switched, its nice not having your phone in your face on a ride. Its tough keeping yourself from looking down to see who texted or emailed you. Also, the computer has limited controls and big buttons its easy to find while you're rolling, as opposed to a touchscreen. On the other hand, if I'm just out exploring and want to look up a destination, or see where I am on a map, the phone wins every time, and I always end up getting it out to supplement the computer.

And to all the salty gatekeepers in this thread, you know when you're a real cyclist? When you like cycling. Happy riding.

Because I can get on my bike and just go. There's no distraction from what I'm doing. I can turn notifications off or ignore the beep that I get when they come in and not worry about it. It always works. I've never, ever found a phone app that does what my Edge 25 did, or even one that did what it did as elegantly. All I want to see is my cadence and heart rate, not a google map of where I've been and a million colors and the constant threat of someone trying to contact me. If you haven't tried one, you really ought to, it was ride-changing for me.

The edge syncs with Strava. I can't imagine using just that app while riding, though.

One of these will tell me when I've hit an awesome jump on my mountain bike and tell me how long I was in the air. It sounds gimmicky but I've come to enjoy that little beep when it registers the jump.

My only real complaint with garmin is they aren't great with updates to provide newer features. I have a Fenix 5+ and a edge 520+ for MTB & road but 520+ didnt get the jump tracking features like the 530, I get it they make money by selling new models but I'm sure they can add with an update.

Just purchased the Varia radar. Was looking at the Varia tail-light for years but riding on mostly busy city streets, didn't think I'd need it, especially at +$150. But reading too many stories of cyclists getting hit these days - just yesterday, retired NBA player Sean Bradley sadly now paralyzed after being rear ended.
