I fish, but I'm not a serious fisherman. I hike but I'm not a serious backpacker. And I tinker around the house but I'm not a serious woodworker or mechanic.

So when I see deals for products for them I don't fully understand, I keep my mouth shut.

If you do long rides, your phone isn't going to last, simple as that.

Just FYI for any who might want a wireless bike computer at a fraction of the price - I ordered this Meilan M3 yesterday for $34.99 [amazon.com] to try it out and see how it does. Obviously nowhere near as feature-packed as the Garmins, but for the money it ought to work well for me.

They actually decreased the battery life on the 130+ model, not increased.

Probably relevant, because it's even worse.

"Notably, battery life on the Edge 130 Plus is listed at 12 hours to the Edge 130's 'up to 15 hours"
Quoting this for emphasis. I have an Edge 130 Plus and I THOUGHT it would last through a 12 hour double-century like my Edge 500 used to but no, not even close. To add insult to injury, they stopped making major updates to the Edge 130 less than 2 years after they released it.

Besides the aformentioned battery life, the reason I finally switched to a bike specific computer was that the chatter from the pavement caused the lense in my smartphone to go out of kilter, pretty much ruining all my pictures until I replaced it. Since my phone cost $800 and the computer only cost $200, I made the switch. A riding buddy had his phone crack when he took a spill with it mounted to the handlebars. At sub $200, it's a very easy decision for me.

Also, the rear radar is definitely one of my favorite bike gadgets, and I sing it's praises to everyone I ride with.
I'm 99% sure my phone mount torqued my phone over time and caused the screen to start glitching out after only 9 months of ownership.

Just an FYI to anyone who was eyeing the Varia RTL515 (Rearview Radar + Taillight) instead of the Varia RVR315 (smaller battery, no taillight) from this deal, there's currently a coupon code for REI members that takes 20% off a regular priced item. (Details)

That takes the RTL515 to $159.99. If you haven't used the Google Pay offer yet, you can get an additional 20% back with that, too! My REI order for the RTL515 just registered in my Google Pay account, so that makes this a super slick deal!

just fyi, you can get cheap smartphones. throw your sim in one when you're out.
the cheaper phones often have removable batteries too.

and i'm pretty sure this garmin edge runs android too.

May I ask, without being attacked, what this does that my smartphone + smart watch can't besides the radar feature? I heard battery life, which has never been even close to an issue for me on any of my 30+ mile rides (I know that's not much compared to serious riders but I really feel I could safely triple that distance if I ever felt like it ((I won't)) and still have battery left).
The idea is that there exists a set of features that you will use every time you ride, and your rides are frequent enough that taking your phone out, attaching it to your handlebars, opening Strava, then doing everything in reverse when you get to your destination, then doing everything all over again for your return trip will become an inconvenience. At that point it's easiest to just have something that is on your bike at all times doing exactly what you need it to do and nothing more. Plus if you take a nasty spill it's easier on the soul to replace a $150 bike computer than a $1000 phone.

Seems like you wouldn't want to risk your $1000 mobile phone mounted on a bike that may fall over at some point, etc.

For anyone that hasn't pulled the trigger yet, I received an email from Garmin that the current sale is ending 11 April, so prices may raise back up shortly across the board. I've picked up a 130 Plus since this thread has been posted.

Only used it once so far, but a little annoyed that the device is showing up as unknown in Garmin Connect in one place and looks like the activity I recorded to it doesn't seem to be accounted for in my training load. from my recollection, my Forerunner watch did account for rides recorded with it.
