I went to Hamer Toyota and they had balls to mark those up 3k plus 1k gps add-on. Came to $56.5k with no negotiation because stimulus money is here and dealers wants it all. Sad state

Hydrogen Fuel cell is exempt from CA rebate income limits.

"The income cap applies for all eligible vehicle types except fuel-cell electric vehicles."

I always had issues with these tax credits. Basically we are subsidizing wealthy people to progress technology. The tax credits should have an income cap or not exist at all. Felt the same way about the Chevy Volt and Tesla.

People buying toys using our tax dollars. Sorry to be a grump.

Also, I thought they had promising developments on hydrogen paste. Much more stable and easier to store, high energy density similar to gasoline. Unless they can convert current hydrogen fuel cell cars... that car will be an expensive tax payer funded collectors item.
Don't have to be wealthy to pay $8k in federal tax.

This thread should be called the Anti-EV Soapbox instead of 2021 Toyota Mirai. Many comments dissing new tech are probably from people driving huge gasoline hogs.
Irony ensues because Mirai isn't EV so nobody really knows why you even brought up EV to begin with.

I have 3 Hydrogen stations near where I work and live. Closest one is 3.5 miles, middle distance is about 6 miles and the furthest of the three is 11 miles away (in So. Cal.)
I am currently in a Hydrogen car (leased a Clarity from Honda). Honda gave me the same $15K gas cards for Hydrogen and also gave me 20K miles a year.. more than enough for my 3 year lease. After everything is said and done, and with free fuel... I calculated that the Clarity was costing me about $108/month to lease!! Not a bad gig for a 36 month lease. The only downside is that I cannot buy the car at the end of lease term as Honda is going to take them back and crush the vehicles. Not sure why they can't, like Toyota, sell the used Hydrogen cars. But I am enjoying this car a lot. It's fully loaded and fast enough for around town driving.
One thing that is disturbing though is that the fueling stations have been raising the price of H per kilo over the past 2 years. They come up with one excuse or other... pretty soon it will all stop making any sense IMHO.

Former Mirai owner here. Not only are there few stations, the stations will be either out of hydrogen, compressors are down, you won't get a complete fill, and the nozzle will become frozen to the fill port. I have seen lines 12 cars deep in Irvine and it's 10mins a fill. I ended up having to fill early mornings at 1-2am to avoid the above issues.

It was a very nice car, Lexus quality
Much prefer the rav4 prime we have now.

Sorry to burst your bubble about electric cars, but they are also "mostly from fossil fuels" - just a different kind of fuel from a different part of the world. Electric vehicles simply help the owner feel better about himself, without realizing that the emissions are just being shunted to a different country that doesn't have our regulations.

For electric vehicles, where do you think electricity comes from? Where do you think all the plastics, paint, synthetic rubber, lubricants, etc. come from? (About 50% of an EV's volume is made from plastics.)

The EV batteries use rare-earth toxic materials (lithium, cobalt, graphite, etc.) which cause large emissions. More than 90% of these rare-earth materials are extracted from China, and somehow we feel like their emissions are not our problem. (In comparison, US gasoline and diesel is now mostly produced in the US.)

New studies show that renewable diesel (different from Biodiesel) has about 40%-50% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to EVs (when you look at the Life-Cycle Analysis).

In summary, just like lottery tickets are a tax for stupid people (or people who can't do math), EVs are a tax for environmentalists who have too much money. (But the federal govt subsidizes the cost by collecting some of the EV-tax from all working Americans.) Don't fall for it.
Lithium mining is .. troublesome. Not saying the gas or diesel is better, but batteries have its own problems.

That's a great deal! Definitely more mainstream/versatile.
For me the extra $15K in fuel card and having fueling options near me tipped it in Mirai's favor. If I count the fuel card value, my cost is ~$8,500 after tax financed at 0% for 72 months.
Link/dealership please .. need to get one for my kid .. and us this price only in CA (I live in WA)

Why not just buy a used Mirai for $17k and still get the $15k fuel card? After you use up the fuel card you can sell it and still break even.
Why would you buy a used one for $17k instead of a new one for $23k that is a much, much better car and will be far easier to sell?

Hydrogen will never catch on.. The oil industry killed it. electric and hybrids will be the future.. electric charging is being ramped up on major highways. There needs to be space and scheduled fillups. Timing is important.

There are lots of horror stories of people moving away from CA due to work and being unable to offload their hydrogen car or get out of their lease without losing tons of money.

There have been several "hydropocalypses" in the past year and depending on where you live, you have to wait in long lines to get fuel or go out of your way to get fuel.

Toyota has been very supportive with accommodating people, but it hasn't been smooth. Decide if the cognitive burden of figuring out how / when to get fuel is worth it to you.
Leaving Ca. because of unavailable fuel? Umm, no. We are heavily taxed (no 1), housing prices through the roof, bad traffic, high gas and electric prices, fees, more fees, big government. It's why many large companies have left with more leaving. We have not had a company of size build a plant here in many years due to excessive regulation and employee costs. For the first time in many decades, rents and business leases are dropping in SF, but rising in Oakland/East Bay. We are the no 1 welfare State and growing larger. I was born/raised here decades ago and we are a former shell of our self. Newsom is facing a recall in a heavily Democrat State and that's telling that people are pissed what these morons are doing to our once golden state. I was in downtown SF last week on business and holy wow, the homeless are camped out and the damn city can't supply porta potties? They are governed by a far left mayor who ignores the problems. We have the most beautiful State I've seen (including Hawaii, but have not been to AK) and that's a shame to have to leave because of pee poor govt. leaders.

Hydrogen after the fuel credit expires, will be a lot more expensive to fill up than gas. By no means I am promoting for a gas vehicle but hydrogen is not just there yet, in terms of filling station and subsidy by the government. Get the plug in or full EV.
No one knows what the cost will be 6 years from now.

Not everyone can own a BEV because they don't have a place to charge it.

I'm not sure what prompted that rant, but people need to sell their cars when they leave CA because the cars don't work anywhere else. People move for a variety of reasons and they will take a bath on a hydrogen car if they have to leave.

OP said: I have a 70 mile round-trip commute, and have been casually e-shopping for an electric or hybrid commuter car. But I never found something that that was a) well-priced, b) a worthwhile quality-of-life improvement over my current daily, and 3) charging an EV where I live is possible, but annoying.

Um, in a few years, we will have no choice. Wasn't it ordered for the automakers to gradually, but sooner than later, make more EV vehicles over Emission vehicles?

Tsla/Pana batteries are now Cobalt free and use synthetic graphite. The lithium mining incident seems unique as lithium is primarily extracted from Bolivia, Chile salt flats, Australia... where the main waste is the abundance of brine water needed. Interesting stuff...

Curious about building a mini station in the garage, this ideally would be the optimal use of renewal fuel versus electricity.
