People buying toys using our tax dollars. Sorry to be a grump.
Also, I thought they had promising developments on hydrogen paste. Much more stable and easier to store, high energy density similar to gasoline. Unless they can convert current hydrogen fuel cell cars... that car will be an expensive tax payer funded collectors item.
I am currently in a Hydrogen car (leased a Clarity from Honda). Honda gave me the same $15K gas cards for Hydrogen and also gave me 20K miles a year.. more than enough for my 3 year lease. After everything is said and done, and with free fuel... I calculated that the Clarity was costing me about $108/month to lease!! Not a bad gig for a 36 month lease. The only downside is that I cannot buy the car at the end of lease term as Honda is going to take them back and crush the vehicles. Not sure why they can't, like Toyota, sell the used Hydrogen cars. But I am enjoying this car a lot. It's fully loaded and fast enough for around town driving.
One thing that is disturbing though is that the fueling stations have been raising the price of H per kilo over the past 2 years. They come up with one excuse or other... pretty soon it will all stop making any sense IMHO.
It was a very nice car, Lexus quality
Much prefer the rav4 prime we have now.
For electric vehicles, where do you think electricity comes from? Where do you think all the plastics, paint, synthetic rubber, lubricants, etc. come from? (About 50% of an EV's volume is made from plastics.)
The EV batteries use rare-earth toxic materials (lithium, cobalt, graphite, etc.) which cause large emissions. More than 90% of these rare-earth materials are extracted from China, and somehow we feel like their emissions are not our problem. (In comparison, US gasoline and diesel is now mostly produced in the US.)
New studies show that renewable diesel (different from Biodiesel) has about 40%-50% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to EVs (when you look at the Life-Cycle Analysis).
In summary, just like lottery tickets are a tax for stupid people (or people who can't do math), EVs are a tax for environmentalists who have too much money. (But the federal govt subsidizes the cost by collecting some of the EV-tax from all working Americans.) Don't fall for it.

For me the extra $15K in fuel card and having fueling options near me tipped it in Mirai's favor. If I count the fuel card value, my cost is ~$8,500 after tax financed at 0% for 72 months.

There have been several "hydropocalypses" in the past year and depending on where you live, you have to wait in long lines to get fuel or go out of your way to get fuel.
Toyota has been very supportive with accommodating people, but it hasn't been smooth. Decide if the cognitive burden of figuring out how / when to get fuel is worth it to you.
Not everyone can own a BEV because they don't have a place to charge it.
Um, in a few years, we will have no choice. Wasn't it ordered for the automakers to gradually, but sooner than later, make more EV vehicles over Emission vehicles?
