Home Depot [homedepot.com] has on clearance their 2-pack of Kidde smoke alarms with ionization sensor and 10-year lithium battery that lasts the life of the alarm. Normally $29.97. Maybe even less expensive at some HD stores. Appears to be in-store only.

Brickseek: https://brickseek.com/home-depot-...=203728683

Features:
  • Protection during power outages and no low battery chirps
  • No hardwire installation required
  • Smart hush feature temporarily silences nuisance alarms
  • No need to replace a battery during the 10-year life of the alarm
  • No low battery chirps; internal timer alerts you to replace the entire unit after 10 years
  • Alarm is equipped with test/reset button which tests the alarms circuitry and horn and resets memory after an alarm has sounded
  • Alarm will automatically activate when attached to the mounting bracket
  • Green LED light indicates that the alarm is working properly
  • Alarms utilize an ionization sensor technology, ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with fast-flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms
  • Smoke detectors utilize an ionization sensor to detect fire hazards and sound an 85 db alarm when a hazard is detected
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • Meets most state requirements - https://www.kidde.com/home-safety...afety-laws

I don't see the appeal?
if same price, why not go with sealed battery

These have a battery that lasts 10 years.
You're supposed to replace them every 10 years even if hardwired type.

Some places require these type now (California for example)

BS and HD do not show "clearance" price and BS shows a ridiculous amount on hand: hundreds. But the HD site shows none at these same stores for 100 miles around. Hints of a wild goose chase.

I'm guessing OP has not bought any, but is only going by what he found on the Internet.

You guessed wrong. I bought several, and included pic of clearance sticker. But I will add YMMV in the title to satisfy you.

Try zip 90210.

Still a likely wild goose chase for the vast majority of us.

My local ones most have bunch of these in the clearance sections (zip 19020) as well as two pack battery powered Carbon monoxide ones like these for $14 and change: https://www.homedepot.com/p/206499379. It will depend on location for sure though but I don't think HD is keeping the correct stock on BS for these anyways.

I'm actually surprised since I normally never get any clearance deal locally, but the BS link said it was on clearance and I called to confirm, Thanks OP for sharing.

Last year I decided to upgrade the 8 smoke detectors that were probably the original install ones with the 25 year old house I bought. After extensive research, I came to the conclusion that ionization smoke detectors are basically useless. You really need to buy a photoelectric detector. They may cost just a few bucks more, but they are FAR superior to the ionization ones. I'm normally all for saving $, but not when it comes to you and your family's lives. If you don't believe me, do a google search comparing the 2 types. Don't be shocked when you see articles referencing the multiple lawsuits that have been brought against First Alert and Kidde over their ionization detectors failing to go off in time which have led to deaths and complete home losses. Some countries have even completely banned the sale of ionization detectors as a result of situations like those.

The 10 years is from the date it was manufactured not when you install it. If these are on clearance, they have a short life left.

they are packaged and shipped with the battery disconnected. When you install it, there are mechanical pieces that move and engage the battery. You certainly might lose a few months of battery life if they have been sitting in a warehouse for years, but I doubt that is actually the case.

Is it really likely they have over 250 in stock? Seems unlikely.
