  • Few books transform a generation and then establish themselves as touchstones for the generations that follow. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one such book. This modern epic of a man's search for meaning became an instant bestseller on publication in 1974, acclaimed as one of the most exciting books in the history of American letters. It continues to inspire millions.
  • A narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions on how to live. The narrator's relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning; the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion, and humanism. Resonant with the confusions of existence, this classic is a touching and transcendent book of life.
  • This new edition contains an interview with Pirsig and letters and documents detailing how this extraordinary book came to be.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who hated this book. Loved the title, thought the book was really overrated.
Lol, no, that's a common misconception. This book is about the Cronus Zen gaming controller adapter.
I'm with you. I was into it at first, but then I thought it kind of went up its own butt, so to speak, and started obsessing over trivialities.

I enjoyed this book but it does get a bit full of itself toward the end. Definitely worth $2 though.

read this book 15 years ago at like age 35.. changed my life. I read it on a lark because I thought the title was funny.

Now I own a first print copy. If Tyler Durden didnt do it to you in fight club. This book will finish the job.

Is this applicable to modern motorcycles or only classic models?
What follows is based on actual occurrences. Although much has been changed for rhetorical purposes, it must be regarded in its essence as fact. However, it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual on motorcycles, either.
From the author's note in ZMM. Emphasis mine.

How long ago was that? I also had to read this for that class, but only read like 10 pages of it. I regret not reading it at that time, but my class was a total joke and you could get away without reading anything. I'm curious how long this book has been assigned for TOK courses.

It was hard to get through. Kept putting me to sleep.

Of course, I went in with absolutely unreal expectations.

Thanks OP for a deal on a book.

That said, I read this book as a working guide by, of and for narcissists. It was an eye opening moment when it is revealed that Chris (the author's son) has basically missed the trip by only seeing the back of his father's jacket. How selfishly disconnected from reality must you be to be so indifferent to those around you to never have said something like, "Hey Chris, how's that view of the mountains?" The author seems to make no connection between an incredibly dull, immobile 17 days for the kid and his acting up.

This commentary sums it up pretty well: https://www.amazon.com/review/R2H14MT7KCC3FZ

And don't get me started on that "Atlas Shrugged" drivel.

I stopped reading at a point where I realized the author is a bit crazy and I am having to put up with this craziness...

I read this in the 70s and remember it giving insights, but for the life of me don't remember what they were. It is possible this could be the best two bucks you ever spent, along with Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
