I am a life long windows user but I just bought an M1 air with 16GB RAM that I will run parallels for windows - every review I've read or watched says the new M1s are obliterating intel and amd on performance and battery life and as a first MacBook airs are surprisingly providing amazing price to performance.
I picked up a second MBA for $870 out the door with M1 and 8GB as an Apple refurb from the education store.
It's insane to think that an $850 MacBook Air is going to nuke loaded XPS13s and X1 carbons but that's where we're at now.

In an ideal world I want to run windows With the mba price, performance and battery life on an X1 nano form factor

Interesting to see them go pack to proprietary chips.

I wouldn't ever move fully from windows because of work, but for travel, the MBA has been attractive for a long time. May have to make the leap.

Got a source for that statistic or you just don't like Macs?

Different strokes for different folks. I personally work with virtualized machines and can't use the new M1, so I stick to Windows. But for folks with a Final Cut Pro or Logic workflow, or for Xcode devs, there's a place for them. Even as a lifestyle machine, if you've got an iPhone, having a MacBook to go with it is a nice seamless experience.

Fanboyism in tech needs to go extinct. We can have preferences but being all cutthroat about a product's use seems pointless.
The issue with Apple is the software lock. I enjoy Mac OS but recently the hardware, i.e. keyboards, have been atrocious.

Thinking the M1 is going to have any effect on the pricing of laptops is misguided, as Macs only have about ~17% of the market share. That being said Macs have been slowly cutting into Windows and at the rate they are going in 10 years Mac performance against Windows may matter in terms of pricing.

I really like this model as it's feather light, I really want the one with the beefier processer though as it would make for a good gaming machine with an eGPU.

A lot of engineers in general seem to prefer Mac over windows (including me). I just find the OS easier and simpler to navigate without as many distractions compared to windows. The seamless experience with other apple devices is also unparalleled

That might not work well as you expect. Running Windows through Parallels can be very slow. The fan will run at full speed all the time. If you will use Windows most of time, avoid this option.

If you just do coding, Mac is OK. But if you use MS Office software such as Excel and Outlook, and other Windows only software such as NotePad++, you'd better use a Windows laptop. A X1 Carbon Gen 9 will be a great choice. Just install wsl2 and Ubuntu 20.04 and it can do great development work.

MS Office is not Windows-only. We run it on our company-issued Macs all the time and it has been available on Mac for 20+ years now.

Let me put it for you this way: I've worked in tech for decades. The solutions that I design and support are almost always centered around Microsoft software. I've got about two dozen Microsoft certifications over the years. I use Bing and Outlook.com instead of Google and gmail. But my work PC is a MacBook Pro, and literally the only thing I can do on Windows that I can't do on a Mac is play games. That includes development. The notion that some subset of users absolutely must have Windows instead of a Mac is very much outdated.

And while we're at it, now that you can stream Steam games from your desktop PC to a Mac (even the M1 models) I'm seeing even less of a use case for Windows outside of my desktop PC.

Yeah never had issues with the office suite on Mac and I prefer Atom to NotePad++ 😀 but yeah Ubuntu is a very common choice too

The Mac version Excel is horrible. If you are a Mac user never used Windows version before, you might not realize this. When you have a big Excel file with macros, you will know.

You can opt for BBEdit for a Notepad++ substitute, or other 3rd party macOS text editor, since there are a few really good ones, you don't need Windows for that.
MS Office exists for macOS, and supports pretty much the same functionalities than its Windows counterparts.

The mac appeal is lost form me if you take into account the locked ecosystem and hardware. I want to control the hardware (well I payed for it, its mine), not the OS controlling what I can and cannot do, which OSes I want to install outside the VM space, find ways to extend support and do my own modifications. On macOS you get 7/8 years of major updates, then you are stuck. I have a perfectly functional MacBook Pro from 2013 that cannot be updated to Big Sur, so I am stuck in Catalina and its issues. I have a Samsung notebook from the same year on Windows 10, updated and running great. For me, a machine with dual boot on Windows and Ubuntu is way more productive than macOS.

This or my 5th gen X1 Carbon which I absolutely love? It's just now starting to get just the teensy bit sluggish and haven't even ran a defrag, have pretty poor file management and it's 3.5 years old... but this i7 and 16gb of ram - this computer is great..! (mine that is)

I missed out on the last deal and jumped on this one as the extra storage of 512GB is definitely worth the extra $50.

Looking forward to using this on trips away from home.

Reformat windows to put the laptop back to factory condition. Then install some of your stuff and see if it's still sluggish. No need to spend $1200 for a new one. I'm contemplating on this laptop myself too though LMAO

The biggest advantage here is the support for hardware AV1 codec decoding on the Nano. Also the Dolby Vision/HDR hardware support on both the CPU/iGPU and the LCD panel. For content consumption the Nano is a great choice.
