I do think the speakers pointing towards the ceiling is kinda a gimmick. If you did a blind test, I don't think the average listener would notice. Also I often have issues with the app and commands not being picked up by the soundbar. Still, I think it's worth it.

This is a better one than vizio one
It's a pretty decent sample size if you go through the recent threads for the v51 and m51, same for their predecessors too. I'm on my 3rd Vizio sound bar in about 6-months.

Atmos is really cool with the right setup. Upfiring speakers and a soundfield calibrated with them work amazingly well! Atmos does some wild individualized positional sound; the more speakers and directionality you can provide to calibrate with, the more crazy the soundfield gets. At least that's been my experience with the setups I've done.
Ceiling-mount downfiring speakers are a nicer option for sure, but a good calibration algorithm will help. The only time I probably wouldn't even bother with upfiring is high or vaulted ceilings.
