This works well at getting the excess air out. It also allows you to save the leftover excess coolant.

Real advantage of this is you overfill and the car will burp all of the trapped air out and suck down coolant.
Newbie here.. Just couple of days ago, I tried replacing coolant with regular funnel. I ensured bubbles are gone by starting the engine in idle, after that went for a very short ride which sucked more coolant and I had to top off again.. Anything wrong or missing any steps that I would need this tool?

I'm surprised they come up with such elaborate kit for something as simple as refilling the coolant!

Preventive maintenance for piece of mind. Distilled water, coolant and this tool is not that expensive.

What is the advantage of using this? If I spill a little coolant I just hose it off.
You keep the funnel full as you run the car and let it heat up. I will normally let the car run 10-15 minutes and this assures that as the car burps it still stays full and the coolant in the funnel is the highest point. After you are done you put the stopper in the funnel so you do not lose much coolant as you remove the funnel.

For those that have a compressor, I would suggest a vacuum purge & refill tool instead of this. It allows you to suck out all the air from the coolant system and then it uses that vacuum to pull in coolant. This is how most shops refill coolant.
Agreed. Even with this funnel ( a knock off of the lisle), air pockets can get left behind. This can lead to potential overheating.

I can't imagine any competent shop is going to use one of these. Takes too long for the car to warm up & thermostat to open. Vacuum filling devices (such as this https://www.amazon.com/UView-5500...B0002SRH5G ) fill the system quickly and entirely leaving no air pockets, no need to 'burp' the system/wait for thermostat to open.

This is more one of those tools you need when you don't have it.
Well, there is always your local parts store which will charge you 3x the cost when "those tools you need when you don't have it".

That's where your overfill container that comes with your car comes in play. The point here is to release as much air as possible. It may not be 100% remove which your car's system will flush it out when it's under pressure. If you follow the protocols in turning on your heat when you purge the system, then at least you get the air out of the usual trapped spaces.

I disagree. This recommendation is good for finding leaks in your cooling system but bleeding the car via the funnel with the thermostat properly opening creates the exact typical running condition the car is in when it leaves the shop that way you are certain there will be no issues. I've worked at many dealerships and now work for a highly regarded personal shop and have seen this used by every ASE technician.

Are you saying this tool is not a must considering the existence of overflow container?
