Really bad product. These AliExpress type junk tends to have very high distortion and noise using some bottom of the barrel DAC chip and a reference design implemented poorly.

Likely a push deal.

Except it doesn't have a DAC chip, its an ADC. I'd wager no one would notice the sound difference between ADCs anyway.

It is a Digital to Analog Converter (i.e. DAC) ...

DACs go anywhere from $8.99 (apparently) to over $50,000. How much do you want to spend?

Topping or SMSL are good brands for standalone units that have been independently measured for performance that start at around $100. Schiit also makes some decent DACs $100+.

The next level down would be the USB dacs from Sound Blaster or ASUS. You can also get the $8 Apple dongle if that works for your use case. It is a very clean one with limitations on output.

This is truly terrible advice.

This 1mii Optical to RCA converter is used 95% of the time to send sound from a TV to a powered speaker or home audio system. You do not need a $100 Topping or SMSL to do that. These $10-$30 devices do it perfectly and have far lower distortion than the TV source. They work great for the designed purpose.

USB DACs will not play the sound from a TV. Normal TVs do not have USB audio out. The $8 Apple Dongle will not send the sound out from a TV, TVs do not have USB-C or Lightning connections.

This 1mii should work perfectly for sending sound out from a TV, but you do have other choices. Some optical converters have volume controls, Dolby Digital capability, and some have Bluetooth as well. If you scroll to the bottom of this listing you can see a lot of choices. [amazon.com]But, just to send sound out of a TV with a Toslink out...this should work fine.

I just bought a Behringer UM2 for $45. It's a USB interface with volume control, USB in, mic and inst channel. RCA and headphone out. It only supports up to 48 khz but it seems to be regarded for having decent sound quality for the price and Behringer's lower end stuff is reasonably reliable. It can be used to drive an amp or powered studio speakers. We'll see how it performs. I've also got a Focusrite 2i2 Scarlett and a Denon USB dac to compare it to, and I've used a small Behringer mixer before with the onboard USB dac that sounded pretty good.

Should also note that almost every modern receiver has a digital optical input and onboard DAC that will perform just as well or better than this little box.

This is total BS. This is the problem with the Internet. Hard to separate wheat from chaff like the above.

The point of using a DAC is to use the digital out from a source. There is NO added distortion in the TV from a digital source since almost all of the content coming into the TV is digital. So, the above quoted material is such an ignorant dumbass comment.

In fact, the digital transceivers in these cheap trash are so bad, they introduce both terrible jitter and power supply related distortion well into audible range. And then there is the crappy analog section of these units that will have a spray of noise and harmonics and crosstalk.

And reading comprehension problems too. The TV is your scenario. The post being responded to was in general and so the response was qualified as if it fits your use case.

Suggest you educate yourself before shilling for trash here.

I have a different brand of this type of DAC and use it for its intended purpose. I have a new TV with only HDMI and optical output for sound. I have an older high end stereo system with a pre-amp that does not support optical or HDMI. I use this type of DAC to connect my TV to the stereo using the optical connection from TV to DAC and RCA cables from DAC to pre-amp. The sound is great with no hissing.
