Interesting. Never heard of this, but watched the short video. It doesn't actually appear to be composting anything though. It looks like it just dehydrates and grinds the food scraps.

I was thinking of buying it but the reviews state you need to buy filters and it costs $120.

That's more like $120/year. Each replacement set of carbon filters costs $25 and the bucket lid carbon filters are $12/3-pack. You change them about every 3-4 months. You might be able to disassemble the filter cartridges and refill it with your own bulk carbon and save some money that way, assuming they don't do any kind of DRM lockout nonsense with the cartridges like we've seen with some inkjet printer and coffee machine manufacturers. Oh, and you do currently get free shipping when you order >$100 worth of filters directly from Vitamix's website.

Buy a large pot or cloth bag, few cu-ft of soil & throw your waste into it. Add some cardboard/paper too & water - Let it compost naturally. Use that for plants/garden.

Okay, so I've been using the Foodcycler for a couple of days now. It's quieter in operation than my mini fridge (after it's done grinding all the bones to a reasonable size), which was honestly surprising to me. I suggest *not* buying extra cylinder filter cartridges. The top caps of the two that come in the kit can easily and non-destructively be removed after loosening the clips on all four sides and refilled with whatever bulk activated carbon you have on hand. That should bring down the opex considerably. Yeah, you could continue to buy fertilizer, but then your food waste is still contributing to landfill greenhouse gas emissions in the form of methane. Aerobic composting is better, but not all of us have the space for a compost mound or tumbler in the back yard. This shrinks my biomass to a reasonable volume and my vermicompost bins take care of the rest.
